Job Overview

Position Title: Unit Clerk

Department: Medical / Nursing

Reports to: Director of Nursing

Supervises: N/A

Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent required. A minimum of one year of experience in a role involving direct patient interaction within the alcohol and drug treatment field is essential. Strong communication skills with patients are necessary. A foundational understanding of recovery principles is required. Typing speed of at least 35 words per minute is expected, and prior experience with medical records is advantageous.

  1. Visual acuity of 20/40 or better with correction in each eye, and the ability to hear (hearing aids permitted).
  2. Legible handwriting is required.
  3. Capability to remain seated for 4 to 6 hours during an 8-hour shift.
  4. Ability to bend and stoop from an upright position to the knees.
  5. If in recovery, two years of continuous, verifiable abstinence is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Processing orders from patient charts.
  2. Handling incoming phone calls.
  3. Performing unit-specific tasks as directed by the Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse.
  4. Managing patient-related activities.
  5. Engaging in special projects as assigned.

Compliance:

Must adhere to the regulations outlined in 42 CFR Part 2 regarding the confidentiality of drug and alcohol abuse patient records, as well as 45 CFR related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. This role entails unrestricted access to patient-identifying information and health records.

Essential Duties:

  1. Ability to accurately take and relay orders.
  2. Answering phone calls in alignment with organizational policies and philosophy.
  3. Developing and maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment.
  4. Overseeing unit supplies specifically related to medications.
  5. Maintaining organized files.
  6. Ensuring an adequate supply of admission packets and preparing charts for new patients.
  7. Assisting in the preparation of medical records following patient discharge.
  8. Providing typing support for nursing documentation as required.
  9. Facilitating orientation for new staff members.
  10. Executing directives within the treatment area.
  11. Assisting in the orientation of new patients.
  12. Engaging therapeutically with patients at the Nurses' Station, ensuring appropriate staff is accessed when necessary.
  13. Maintaining patient identification bracelets, photo ID systems, and label databases.
  14. Performing additional duties as assigned.
  15. Exhibiting the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, management, clients, and prospective clients.
  16. Maintaining a constant state of alertness to ensure job safety.
  17. Demonstrating regular attendance.
