This role presents an exciting opportunity to innovate and develop cutting-edge optical technologies that may be incorporated into advanced space systems, significantly enhancing payload solutions for the future.

As a Senior Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in a rapidly expanding sector by designing, developing, and demonstrating novel optical technologies aimed at minimizing size, weight, power consumption, and costs associated with compact satellite optical payloads. Your work will also focus on improving performance to unlock new capabilities. Initially, your responsibilities will involve collaborating with existing optical designers to comprehend the trade-offs in optical payload design, exploring new optical concepts such as diffractive optics, meta-optics, and gradient index lenses, and generating new insights for integrating these technologies into future optical payload development. Additional duties may include acting as a Principal Investigator (PI) on Contract R&D projects with governmental entities and engaging in innovative payload concepts through internal R&D initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Utilize your expertise in optical design and emerging optical technologies to assess performance trade-offs regarding size, weight, and power for satellite optical payloads.
  • Employ modeling tools to gain insights into the co-design of various optical technologies within a single payload.
  • Work collaboratively with optical designers and team members to evaluate and advance optical technologies, establishing a pathway for their transition to production and integration into optical payloads.
  • Contribute to the development of a roadmap for innovative imaging technologies for future space systems while investigating nascent concepts.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related field with 8-12 years of relevant experience; Master's degree with 6-10 years; or Doctorate with 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Qualified candidates must be eligible to obtain a Secret security clearance (no clearance required to start).
  • Expertise in evaluating the performance of optical components, including point spread functions (PSFs), modulation transfer functions (MTFs), and encircled power.
  • Experience in the fabrication and characterization of optics, including diffractive and meta-optics.
  • Proficient in finite element-based design tools such as COMSOL, CST, or Lumerical.
  • Skilled in optical design tools such as Zemax or Code V.
  • Proficient in Windows operating systems.
  • Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to collaborate with clients and deliver results.
  • Mission-driven with a strong capability to guide a team towards achieving objectives and delivering tangible products.
  • Proficient in technical writing, documentation, and organizational skills.
  • Strong initiative and self-motivation, capable of working independently.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret security clearance.
  • Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related field are preferred.
  • Experience in developing hybrid optical systems utilizing novel optical components.
  • Experience in proposal development and business development.
