POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general oversight of the Administrative Director of Laboratory Services, the Clinical Laboratory Technologist is tasked with conducting a variety of chemical, microscopic, and microbiological assessments within designated technical domains.

This role involves researching and applying relevant protocols, standards, and technical literature to operate autonomously.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
While this job description aims to be comprehensive, it does not encompass all duties that may be assigned to the incumbent.

Maintains the functionality of assigned technical areas to guarantee that all assessments are executed within a clinically effective timeframe.

Conducts both routine and advanced procedures in designated areas utilizing professional expertise and training, along with established and standardized protocols.

Ensures technical proficiency in all procedures executed in the assigned departments.

Adheres to all quality assurance and quality control regulations; promptly informs the director of any unresolved issues.

Performs maintenance as defined operationally; alerts the director of any identified concerns.

Executes Quality Control (QC) as operationally defined; assesses each QC test and implements corrective measures as necessary.

Diagnoses testing and/or analyzer challenges using prescribed methods and analytical thinking skills.

Demonstrates stewardship for all laboratory instruments and supplies; maintains an organized and tidy workspace.

Acts as a resource for other technical staff; delegates tasks to subordinate personnel as required.

Accepts assignments in other sections or shifts as needed. Workstation and shift assignments may change based on workload demands. Provides support to other sections when necessary to manage workloads.

Communicates effectively and professionally at all times.

Assists in the evaluation and comparison of established and proposed procedures and formulates additional procedures as needed for departmental review and approval.

Provides training to other staff as necessary; assesses outcomes and certifies the technical competence of those trained.

Complies with the HMH Legal Compliance Code of Conduct and all HMH policies.

Maintains patient confidentiality and ensures appropriate handling of PHI.

Upholds a safe working environment, adheres to all safety protocols, and reports safety concerns appropriately.

Performs all other related duties as assigned.


INTERACTIONS AND COLLABORATION

All roles at Huntsville Memorial Hospital are part of an interdisciplinary team, participating in the care and service delivery process through effective collaboration with other team members.

Primarily engages with hospital personnel, medical staff, patients, and visitors.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science or requisite college credits to enter a twelve-month internship in an accredited Medical Technology program is required.

A Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology, or Microbiology is preferred.

Experience:
One year of experience in a hospital laboratory setting is preferred.

Licensure/Certification:
Current MT (ASCP) or equivalent certification is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent:
Sitting, standing, walking, and reaching.

Occasional:
Lifting, carrying, bending, and squatting. Visual and auditory acuity is required; color vision is necessary for perceiving colors of solutions. Work is conducted indoors, with adequate ventilation and a comfortable temperature.

Potential exposure to:
Toxic/caustic chemicals or detergents, moving mechanical parts, risk of electric shock, communicable diseases, and blood-borne pathogens.
