Job Overview

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Under the general oversight of the Charge Nurse, the Staff Registered Nurse employs professional nursing competencies through the nursing process to deliver exceptional patient care. This role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for designated patients while acting as an advocate within the healthcare framework. The Staff RN is responsible for executing patient care that necessitates specialized training and expertise, ensuring to uphold safety, comfort, and treatment standards in accordance with legal, ethical, and institutional guidelines. Participation in the hospital's Quality Improvement and Service Excellence initiatives is essential, along with adherence to departmental and organizational policies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job description aims to be comprehensive; however, it does not encompass all duties that may be assigned. The absence of specific tasks does not exclude them from the role if they are similar or logically related.

  1. Employ the nursing process to assess, plan, deliver, document, and evaluate patient care.
  2. Conduct systematic and ongoing data collection, utilizing physiological and psychological principles to establish nursing diagnoses and predict outcomes.
  3. Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and set patient goals based on identified nursing diagnoses.
  4. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate and plan nursing care, making informed clinical decisions in patient care delivery.
  5. Provide competent care tailored to the needs of patients and the population served, implementing interventions outlined in the care plan.
  6. Assess patient progress towards achieving outcomes and maintain effective communication with physicians and team members.
  7. Facilitate patient and family education based on individual needs and devise strategies to address those needs.
  8. Administer and manage medications accurately.
  9. Follow infection control protocols diligently.
  10. Understand and uphold patient rights, including confidentiality, informed consent, and privacy.
  11. Exhibit adaptability, problem-solving skills, and professionalism consistently.
  12. Engage in ongoing evaluation of programs and processes to enhance client-centered outcomes.
  13. Support personal professional development through mandatory education and competence validation, contributing to departmental goals and mentoring less experienced staff.
  14. Participate in readiness activities for surveys and ensure compliance with all regulatory standards.
  15. Adhere to the Legal Compliance Code of Conduct.

CONTACTS AND INTERACTIONS

All positions at Huntsville Memorial Hospital are part of an interdisciplinary team, necessitating effective collaboration with other team members. Primary interactions include hospital staff, medical personnel, patients, and visitors.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduate from an accredited nursing program.

Experience: Preferred one year of experience in Medical/Surgical nursing.

Licensure/Certification: Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Texas or eligibility for licensure. Basic Life Support certification is required within 30 days of employment, prior to independent patient care. Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is required within 90 days of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent activities include standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and reaching. Occasional activities involve sitting, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, and twisting. Visual and auditory acuity are necessary; color vision is required for recognizing changes in patients' skin color and medication solutions. The work environment is primarily indoors, with adequate ventilation and a comfortable temperature. Potential exposure to toxic chemicals, moving mechanical parts, electrical hazards, communicable diseases, and bloodborne pathogens may occur.
