Position Overview:
Join a prestigious academic healthcare institution, UChicago Medicine, as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist in the Blood Bank.

In this capacity, you will conduct both standard and specialized laboratory tests, operate advanced diagnostic equipment, and prepare and distribute blood products such as washed red blood cells and leuko-reduced red blood cells.

Your responsibilities will include ensuring quality assurance, maintaining laboratory instruments, and developing methodologies to support a comprehensive array of routine and specialized tests, including antibody identification.

This department serves as a reference laboratory, providing testing services to various healthcare organizations, managed care entities, and independent medical practices.

We deliver a complete suite of diagnostic services in both clinical and anatomical pathology, with numerous areas of specialization.

In this role, you will routinely execute a diverse range of clinical analyses across all laboratory sections by effectively utilizing various methodologies and instruments in accordance with laboratory protocols and regulatory standards, ensuring the highest quality results for healthcare providers and their patients.

Essential Duties:

1. Receive and process specimens submitted to the laboratory.

Utilize established policies and procedures to assess whether submitted specimens meet the criteria for analysis.

2. Ensure proper storage and handling of specimens that cannot be analyzed immediately.


3. Conduct preliminary preparations for analysis, including centrifugation of blood samples, aliquotting of fluids, and distributing prepared specimens to the appropriate laboratory sections.

4. Address inquiries related to specimen management, results, and technical information. Assist clinicians with requests and seek necessary resources when information is unavailable.


5. Perform all procedures classified under CLIA'88 as moderate or highly complex testing; understand all responsibilities outlined in the laboratory procedure manual to execute these procedures with the utmost quality within established turnaround times.


6. Utilize all necessary equipment safely and proficiently, adhering to maintenance, safety, and quality control policies and procedures.


7. Prepare and maintain an adequate supply of reagents, standards, and control materials for testing at your workstation, notifying supervisors of any shortages or issues.

8. Analyze all test and quality control results for errors, inconsistencies, and deviations prior to reporting results. Document troubleshooting and problem-solving efforts to resolve issues.


9. Report all test results in the laboratory information system according to established policies and procedures, within specified turnaround times, and follow appropriate backup protocols during system downtimes.

10. Communicate any relevant information or issues with laboratory staff and supervisors in a respectful and proactive manner.

11. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

1. Certification or eligibility as a medical technologist (MT) or specialist in chemistry (SC) or hematology (SH) through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent.

2. Must meet CLIA 88 qualification requirements for personnel performing high complexity testing.

3. Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or a related field from an accredited institution.

4. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. At least one year of relevant laboratory experience is preferred.

2. Familiarity with laboratory and hospital information systems.

3. Proficiency in using both automated and conventional laboratory equipment.
