Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Accountant to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation. As a Senior Accountant, you will play a critical role in maintaining accurate financial records, preparing complex financial reports, and ensuring compliance with federal and state policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, including general ledger transactions and balances.
  • Prepare complex financial reports, statements, and schedules in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Department of Accounts (DOA) policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement effective financial management systems and processes to ensure efficient and accurate financial operations.
  • Collaborate with other state agencies, central office divisions, and district offices to ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures.
  • Support the Agency Risk Assessment and Internal Control Standards (ARMICS) certification cycle by documenting, implementing, and maintaining fiscal internal control processes.
  • Prepare special reports and analyses as requested by management.
Requirements
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex regulations to evaluate the adequacy of documentation.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working and interpersonal relationships with all divisions and customers.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data and prepare technical reports.
  • Ability to perform in-depth financial reconciliations, journal entries, and a variety of other transactions.
  • Skilled in performing mathematical calculations.
  • Knowledge of Fund and bond accounting and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Ability to perform detailed work with numbers.
  • Skilled in the use of computers and software applications to include MS Office products, with an emphasis on Excel, and automated financial management software systems.
  • Requires strong attention to detail and ability to effectively prioritize tasks and demonstrate high organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures, filing systems, and coding structures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Accounting or Business Administration.
  • Certified Government Financial Management.
  • Certified Public Accountant.
