Position Overview:


The primary duties of the Flexible Pharmacy Technician closely align with those of a Certified Pharmacy Technician III. This role involves working under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist, assisting in various functions within the pharmacy department.

The key distinction for this position is the expectation for the technician to adapt to different work locations as outlined by Baystate Health Pharmacy policies and procedures, ensuring comprehensive training and understanding of workflows and protocols across various acute care pharmacy settings.

Flex technicians will support the preparation of non-sterile, sterile, and hazardous medications.


Under the direction of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and the Assistant Director of Inpatient Pharmacy Services, the technician is responsible for the essential functions and duties specified in this document, with the understanding that all employees may be required to perform additional related tasks as assigned.

Management reserves the right to modify job responsibilities based on workflow or process changes as necessary.


Key Responsibilities:
1) Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of the responsibilities associated with the assigned position, performing various functions related to the institutional drug distribution system in compliance with regulatory standards.

2) Accurately compound, pre-package, and re-package medications, including labeling for bulk solid/liquid dosage forms in accordance with departmental policies.

3) Conduct aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms, adhering to aseptic techniques and proper procedures for preparing all types of parenteral admixtures, including specialty solutions.

4) Maintain a solid understanding of the chemical and physical properties of medications handled in the pharmacy, including identifying medications that require special handling.

5) Operate automated systems (e.g., Pyxis, compounders, computers) following established policies and procedures.

6) Execute essential functions related to drug purchasing and inventory management as required.

Commitment to Quality Improvement:
Participate in the refilling, checking, and labeling of code carts according to policy.

Engage in training and orientation of new pharmacy staff and contribute to the staff development program.

Maintain knowledge of medication error prevention strategies and preparation techniques for high-risk medications.


Customer Service and Team Collaboration:
Effectively interact with other department members and healthcare teams, ensuring patient rights and confidentiality are upheld.

Manage incoming calls and triage orders appropriately.


Attendance:
Adhere to Baystate Health attendance policies.

Required Experience:
1) None

Preferred Experience:
1) Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician is preferred.

Skills and Competencies:
1) Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential.

Education:
GED or HiSET (Required)

Certifications:
Certified Pharmacy Technician – Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
