Overview

The Pediatric Education Program Manager will oversee and guide the educational transition and reintegration initiatives within the hematology, oncology, and bone marrow transplant divisions. This role involves the development and implementation of educational programs and services tailored for students, families, healthcare staff, school district personnel, and community stakeholders, engaging in various settings focused on the education of children facing cancer and hematological challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the educational authority for the hematology and oncology teams, providing support to patients, families, and community partners.
  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to gather current information and research findings pertinent to the educational needs of children with medical conditions, sharing insights with care teams to enhance school services.
  • Engage in research activities within the division, contributing expertise to improve educational outcomes for children undergoing treatment.
  • Participate in leadership committees related to the hematology and oncology division.
  • Collaborate with educators from local school districts to ensure effective educational support for patients.
  • Manage the volunteer tutor program, including the orientation and oversight of tutors.
  • Collect and analyze data for ongoing program evaluation and improvement.
  • Create and distribute educational materials for families, peers, school staff, and healthcare providers.
  • Provide expert consultation on psychosocial activities for patients in active treatment and survivors.
  • Facilitate training sessions for families, peers, and staff on educational resources and strategies.
  • Maintain a current understanding of special education laws and processes to advocate effectively for students.
  • Build and sustain a network of professional relationships within the community at local, regional, and national levels.
  • Consult with care teams to enhance educational coordination for patients aged 3-21 and select adult patients.
  • Coordinate communication between families and home school districts to facilitate educational services.
  • Conduct school visits for educational outreach and service planning.
  • Provide advocacy for families navigating special education referrals and individualized education programs (IEPs).
  • Monitor academic progress through regular communication with patients, families, and school staff.
  • Participate in patient care rounds and treatment team meetings for program planning and monitoring.
  • Explore opportunities for virtual educational experiences for hospitalized children.
  • Adhere to ethical standards and guidelines in all patient care activities.
  • Ensure availability of services to meet the needs of patients and families.
  • Complete required educational sessions in a timely manner.
  • Supervise School Liaison staff and manage administrative tasks related to educational programs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master's degree in social work or education.
  • At least 10 years of experience working with children, including advocacy, educational settings, and program development.

Required Skills:

  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication abilities.
  • Strong initiative with the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • In-depth knowledge of child development principles.
  • Excellent advocacy and program development skills.
  • Proficient in research analysis and interpretation.
  • Demonstrated engagement in academic activities, including publications and presentations.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office and other relevant technologies.
  • Strong organizational and customer service skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform manual tasks and travel as needed.
