Position Overview:

As the premier repository of Shakespearean works, the Folger Shakespeare Library serves as a distinguished hub for scholarship, education, culture, and the arts. Folger Theatre, a not-for-profit AEA organization, presents a full season of performances featuring Shakespeare and other esteemed playwrights.

We are in search of a proficient Lighting Control Specialist to join our vibrant Production team for upcoming theatrical productions.

This role entails assisting the Production Manager/Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, and Master Electrician in programming the lighting control system, operating the system during technical rehearsals and performances, and maintaining lighting apparatus within the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Additional opportunities may arise in poetry readings, humanities lectures, discussions, and programming in new venues.

The Lighting Control Specialist will play a crucial role in the development and execution of theatrical presentations, collaborating closely with design and creative teams. This position reports directly to the Production Manager/Technical Director and is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative individual to contribute to a dynamic organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program lighting cues as instructed, ensuring design integrity through routine checks and maintenance of the lighting system, and operate lights for all performances. May also be tasked with running video content as needed.
  • Maintain clear communication with the Production Manager/Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, Master Electrician, Stage Manager, and Lighting Designer.
  • Support the Production Manager/Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director regarding lighting equipment. Assist the Master Electrician in monitoring equipment and supply inventory and condition. Ensure proper storage and protection of equipment while maintaining cleanliness and organization of the facility and storage areas.
  • May serve as a member of the run crew as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 2 years of technical theater experience in production, including crew operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of theatrical lighting technologies, processes, and equipment is essential.
  • Prior experience in lighting design, installation, and maintenance; basic technical skills; and production communication practices are required.
  • Familiarity with ETC consoles is necessary.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and collaborate with diverse individuals.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and initiative are essential.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and multitasking abilities are required.
  • Capability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment is necessary.
Physical Requirements:

This position operates within a professional theater environment, where the employee may encounter various theatrical elements such as fluorescent lighting, low light conditions, dust, and recycled air. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this role.   • This role requires high mobility. Candidates must be able to stand for extended periods, regularly use stairs and ladders, and lift up to 60 pounds.
