  • CalHealthCares Loan Repayment Program - Up to $300,000 loan repayment for five (5) years of service.
  • Steven M. Thompson Physician Corps Loan Repayment Program - Up to $105,000 loan repayment for three (3) years of service.
  • National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program - Up to $75,000 loan repayment for two (2) years of service or potential complete student loan repayment with continued service (Must work in an NHSC approved site).
  • 5% differential pay for ABPN Board Certification.
San Bernardino County is seeking qualified Psychiatrists II who will take on medical responsibilities for adult and/or child and adolescent patients under their direct care in outpatient clinics. Incumbents may also supervise/teach residents and medical students or work in specialized areas such as outpatient forensics, correctional mental health services, Clozaril, Diversion, Quality Management, or Informatics.

Key responsibilities include conducting thorough psychiatric assessments and mental status evaluations of adult patients, providing multi-axial diagnoses according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as recognized by the American Psychiatric Association; developing and executing personalized mental health treatment plans for assigned adult patients; delivering effective psychotropic medication management and other psychiatric interventions to address the needs of assigned adult patients; and performing related duties as necessary.

The Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) is dedicated to offering mental health and substance use disorder services to county residents facing significant mental health challenges or substance use issues. DBH provides comprehensive mental health and substance use disorder prevention and treatment services to individuals of all ages, with a primary focus on assisting children/youth who may be seriously emotionally disturbed, adults with serious and persistent mental illnesses, and individuals dealing with substance use disorders. DBH also offers a variety of outreach, engagement, prevention, and early intervention services. The core values of DBH are service, integrity, accountability, and trust.

DBH comprises eight (8) direct service areas: Community Outpatient and Transitional Age Youth Services; Children and Youth Collaborative Services; Substance Use Disorder and Recovery Services; 24-Hour and Specialty Services; Adult Justice Involved and Diversion Services; Medical Services; Community Engagement and Equity Services; Office of Patients' Rights, and five (5) indirect service areas: Administrative and Fiscal Services; Public Relations and Outreach Services; Program Support Services; Disaster and Safety Unit; Office of Compliance. The Department currently employs over 1000 personnel and manages an approximate annual budget of $700 million.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Completion of Residency: Official job offers cannot be made until candidates have verified completion of residency. Contingent job offers may be extended to applicants who have provided verification of being within twelve (12) months of completing residency.

Teaching Requirement: Incumbents will be tasked with supervising/teaching medical learners.

Background Check: An extensive background check will encompass a credit check, fingerprint/DOJ LiveScan, and DMV check. Candidates must be U.S. Citizens or permanent U.S. residents. Medical examinations will also include drug and TB testing.

Work Schedule: Evening and weekend shifts may be available for certain assignments (voluntary participation).

Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is unable to consider candidates requiring visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must meet ALL of the following criteria:

Education: Graduation from an accredited medical school is mandatory.

Residency: Completion of a psychiatry residency approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education is required. A copy of the residency completion certificate MUST be submitted with the application.

Note: Applications will be accepted from candidates within twelve (12) months of completing residency. Applicants must provide a verification letter from their residency program confirming the anticipated completion date.

License: Possession of a valid Physician's and Surgeon's certificate issued by the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California is required. Applicants MUST indicate their license number and expiration date on the Supplemental Questionnaire to be considered.

Certification: A valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate is required. A copy of the DEA certificate must be submitted with the application.

Experience: Six (6) months of full-time experience teaching residents and/or medical students. (Teaching experience gained during residency hours is qualifying.)

-OR-

Six (6) months of full-time experience in a behavioral health specialty clinic/area (e.g., outpatient forensics, correctional mental health services, Clozaril, Diversion, Quality Management, or Informatics). Experience must be gained within a public or private behavioral health or healthcare organization to be considered qualifying.

Desired Qualifications

Applicants fluent in American Sign Language, Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, and/or Vietnamese are strongly encouraged to apply. Additional compensation is associated with positions requiring bilingual skills. Testing of bilingual skills may be required to receive additional compensation.

The ideal candidate will be certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. (Candidates who are certified should submit a copy of their certificate with the application). Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills and have experience collaborating in multidisciplinary treatment teams and developing strong relationships with community providers. Experience working with seriously mentally ill individuals, eating disorders, under-served populations, and with children and adolescents is highly desirable.
