Ophthalmic Support Specialist

The Ophthalmic Technician plays a crucial role in executing advanced ophthalmic assessments, procedures, measurements, and tests to supply essential data to healthcare providers and support patient care.
This role involves assisting the provider during patient examinations, office laser treatments, and surgical procedures, acting as the primary assistant in the operating room. A solid understanding of the daily operations within an ophthalmology outpatient setting is essential. The Ophthalmic Technician is expected to consistently exhibit qualities of Patient Centeredness, Teamwork, and Excellence in all aspects of their responsibilities.
Qualifications:Preferred qualifications include certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) with a minimum of two years of experience in ophthalmic assistance. Alternatively, a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who completes a home study course within the first six months of employment is acceptable. Licensure in Pennsylvania and New York is mandatory.
Individuals with Surgical Technician Certification and operating room experience may be considered, provided they complete a home study course within six months and obtain certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant within the first year of employment. Until certification is achieved, the employee will be compensated at a grade lower than that of an Ophthalmic Technician.
For those without COA, COT, COMT, or LPN credentials, completion of the Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OSC) is required within the first three weeks of employment.
Key Responsibilities:- Accurately gathers and documents the chief complaint and a comprehensive history of the present illness. Reviews and updates the patient's ocular, medical, family, and social history, ensuring the medical records reflect the most current information.
- Conducts portions of the ophthalmic examination, performs diagnostic testing and procedures, and documents findings while staying abreast of new technologies and methodologies.
- Acts as a scribe for the provider, capturing, summarizing, and documenting pertinent examination data, clinical findings, and the assessment and plan.
- Provides patient education, assists with informed consent, and prepares and reviews surgical documentation.
- Supports the provider during laser and surgical procedures in the office, including those requiring aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Serves as the first assistant in the operating room.
- Responsible for the cleaning and sterilization of office instruments, performing basic maintenance, quality control, and inventory management of ophthalmic examination rooms and ancillary equipment according to established protocols.
- Handles documentation, tracking, and reporting of surgical co-management; processes forms related to DMV, disability, legal blindness, insurance, and low vision; reviews and monitors the provider's schedule for efficiency and accuracy; triages messages and phone calls, responding to patients as directed by the provider.
- Facilitates orientation and training for new staff and identifies opportunities to educate fellow team members.
- May require travel to regional offices as necessary.
- Participates in mandatory staff and educational meetings as requested.
- Provides coverage as needed throughout the department.
