Position Overview:

The Ophthalmic Technician plays a crucial role in delivering advanced ophthalmic assessments, procedures, and diagnostic tests to support healthcare providers and enhance patient care.

This position involves assisting the provider during patient examinations, office-based laser treatments, and surgical procedures, acting as the primary assistant in the operating room. A solid understanding of the daily operations within an ophthalmology outpatient setting is essential.

The ideal candidate will exhibit qualities of self-motivation, adaptability, punctuality, attention to detail, effective time management, and exceptional communication skills.

Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) with a minimum of two years of experience in ophthalmic assistance. Alternatively, a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who completes a home study course within the first six months of employment is acceptable. Licensure in Pennsylvania and New York is mandatory.

Certification as a Surgical Technician with operating room experience may be considered, provided that the home study course is completed within six months and certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant is obtained within the first year of employment. Until certification is achieved, the employee will be compensated at a lower grade.

For those without COA, COT, COMT, or LPN, completion of the Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OSC) is required within the first three weeks of employment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Accurately gather and document the patient's chief complaint and comprehensive medical history, ensuring all information is current and verified.
  • Conduct portions of the ophthalmic examination, perform diagnostic tests, and document findings while staying updated on new technologies and procedures.
  • Act as a scribe for the provider, capturing and summarizing essential examination data, clinical findings, and treatment plans.
  • Educate patients, assist with informed consent processes, and prepare surgical documentation.
  • Support the provider during laser and surgical procedures, adhering to aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Serve as the first assistant in the operating room.
  • Oversee the cleaning and sterilization of office instruments, maintain quality control, and manage inventory of ophthalmic equipment according to established protocols.
  • Document and track surgical co-management, process necessary forms, and monitor the provider's schedule for efficiency and accuracy.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate orientation and training for new staff members and seize opportunities to educate colleagues.
  • Travel to regional offices as required.
  • Participate in mandatory staff meetings and educational sessions.
  • Provide coverage throughout the department as needed.
