The Ophthalmic Technician plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality ophthalmic care by conducting advanced evaluations, procedures, and diagnostic tests to assist healthcare providers and enhance patient treatment.
This position involves supporting the provider during patient examinations, office-based laser treatments, and surgical procedures, serving as a first assistant in the operating room. A solid understanding of the daily operations within an ophthalmology outpatient setting is essential. The Ophthalmic Technician is expected to exemplify principles of Patient Centeredness, Teamwork, and Excellence in all aspects of their work.
Qualifications:Preferred qualifications include certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) with a minimum of two years of experience in ophthalmic assistance. Alternatively, a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who completes a home study course within the first six months of employment may be considered. Licensure in relevant states is required.
Individuals with Surgical Technician Certification and operating room experience may be eligible, provided they complete a home study course within six months and obtain certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant within the first year of employment. Until certification is achieved, the employee will be compensated at a lower grade.
For those without COA, COT, COMT, or LPN credentials, completion of the Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OSC) is mandatory within the first three weeks of employment.
Key Responsibilities:- Accurately gathers and documents the patient's chief complaint and comprehensive medical history, ensuring all records are current and complete.
- Conducts portions of the ophthalmic examination, performs diagnostic tests, and meticulously documents findings while staying abreast of advancements in technology and procedures.
- Acts as a scribe for the provider, capturing and summarizing essential examination data, clinical findings, and the overall assessment and plan.
- Educates patients, assists with informed consent processes, and prepares surgical documentation.
- Supports the provider during laser and surgical procedures, adhering to aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Serves as the first assistant in the operating room.
- Responsible for the cleaning and sterilization of instruments, performing maintenance, quality control, and managing inventory of ophthalmic equipment according to established protocols.
- Handles documentation, tracking, and reporting related to surgical co-management, and processes various forms as required.
- Facilitates orientation and training for new staff members and identifies opportunities to mentor colleagues.
- May require travel to various locations as necessary.
- Participates in mandatory staff meetings and educational sessions.
- Provides coverage across the department as needed.
