Position Overview

This role is situated within the U.S. Department of the Interior, specifically in the Science and Resource Management Division. The appointments are designed as Career-Seasonal, offering permanent employment with benefits similar to Career appointments, yet do not guarantee year-round work. Employees will typically be engaged from approximately February through December , with a non-pay status for one pay period in January.

Responsibilities

- Collect and systematically organize field data.
- Ensure rigorous quality control of the data gathered.
- Conduct routine testing of biological samples collected.
- Document all findings and relay results to supervisors or higher-level specialists.
- Observe and report on the conditions of natural resources in the field.
- Provide analytical results to senior specialists for further evaluation.
- Offer logistical support and orientation for contract or collaborating scientists.
- Install, operate, and maintain various resource management tools and equipment (including sampling, monitoring, photographic, and laboratory instruments).
- Inventory and calibrate equipment as required.
- Utilize diverse computer applications to compile, analyze, store, retrieve, and report data related to resource management and scientific research.
- Maintain and organize electronic databases.
- Prepare a variety of internal reports, correspondence, and documents based on information sourced from office staff and records, while reviewing and finalizing documents prepared by others.
- Establish and maintain a variety of office records to support efficient operations.

  • This position may require drug testing due to responsibilities involving firearms in non-law enforcement contexts.
  • A valid driver's license is essential as the role involves operating a government or private vehicle; submission of a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record is required.
  • Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is expected, with an allowance provided.
  • Flexibility to work on-call, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime may be necessary.
  • New federal employees or supervisors must complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Overnight travel may be required, necessitating the acquisition of a government charge card for travel expenses.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be fulfilled by the closing date of this announcement. Relevant experience will be credited accordingly. To qualify, candidates must demonstrate one of the following minimum qualifications:

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service, which includes assisting in established natural resource management projects, adhering to standardized procedures for fieldwork, collecting and organizing data, performing testing of biological samples, and supporting higher-level specialists in report preparation.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of a four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, including at least 24 semester hours of scientific or technical courses directly related to this position.

A combination of education and experience as described above. Documentation of qualifications must be provided.

Volunteer Experience: Experience gained through volunteer work, including National Service programs, will be considered in evaluating qualifications.

Education Documentation

Candidates must submit a legible copy of transcripts reflecting relevant coursework and grades. If foreign education is claimed, an evaluation of equivalency to U.S. education standards is required.
