Job Title: Detention Officer

Job Summary:
The City of Myrtle Beach is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Detention Officer to join our team. As a Detention Officer, you will be responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the detention facility, ensuring the well-being of inmates, and providing exceptional customer service to the public.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Enforce all rules and regulations of the detention facility
  • Maintain safety and security of the general public, facility staff, and inmates
  • Take custody of new arrivals and escort inmates to various parts of the facility
  • Process incoming inmates, explain jail rules and regulations, and conduct property inventory
  • Prepare in-processing documentation, make photographs and fingerprint records, and obtain NCIC background reports
  • Determine appropriate classification of each inmate and refer juveniles to a certified Juvenile Officer
  • Segregate prisoners into proper cells, assign jail housing, and issue clothing, bedding, and personal hygiene items
  • Monitor inmate activities, take and record periodic headcounts, and conduct medical/sick call
  • Control movements of inmates, transport prisoners to medical facilities, and coordinate visitation and telephone communications
  • Maintain security of the facility, perform periodic security checks, and monitor video surveillance equipment
  • Supervise inmates during visitation, meals, and medical call, and report unusual observations to superiors
  • Respond to prisoner, employee, or facility emergencies, and operate fire suppression equipment, administer medications, and provide first-aid and/or CPR when needed
  • Conduct release of prisoners, prepare out-processing documentation, and run NCIC reports
  • Respond to questions, complaints, and requests for information from inmates, the general public, court personnel, medical staff, attorneys, clergy, officers, employees, and supervisors
  • Ensure inmates with special needs receive required attention, mediate disputes between inmates and/or staff members, and counsel and/or discipline inmates as required
  • Conduct NCIC checks on arrestees, enter/retrieve computer data, and perform other dispatching tasks within the communication center
  • Transport inmates after bond hearings and court dates, and perform functions related to live scan/ink printing
  • Maintain the doors, batteries, and cleanliness of the sally port, and secure and maintain overflow/large properties from inmates
  • Keep an inventory of all jail equipment, and perform court services, substitute for co-workers, and assist with training new Detention Officers
  • Escorts maintenance workers, pest control, and other outside service personnel while in jail, and disposes of waste and garbage from mealtime
  • Performs traffic control duties and assists with special events, provides transport assistance to patrol and specialized units, and applies self-defense techniques in controlled and uncontrolled environments
  • Assists records division with database maintenance, keeps vehicle fleet clean, and reports and problems to supervisor and fleet manager
  • Performs daily "walk around" of building to ensure doors are secured and trash is picked up

Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • No previous experience required, but some public relations experience in a similar jail or law enforcement environment preferred
  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and a U.S. Citizen or resident status
  • Must pass and maintain the following certifications: NCIC, Basic Jail Officer, Juvenile Specifics, Firearm qualification, basic first-aid, and FEMA NIMS Incident Command
