Job Summary

The City of Myrtle Beach, SC is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Detention Officer to join our team. As a Detention Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of inmates, staff, and visitors within the jail facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Enforce all rules and regulations of the jail, maintaining safety and security of the general public, facility staff, and inmates.
  • Take custody of new arrivals, escort inmates to various parts of the jail facility, and conduct searches of prisoners and their property.
  • Process incoming inmates, explain jail rules and procedures, and prepare in-processing documentation.
  • Conduct book-in interviews, answer questions from prisoners, and determine appropriate classification of each inmate.
  • Monitor inmate activities, take and record periodic headcounts, and conduct medical/sick call to distribute medications.
  • Control movements of inmates, transport prisoners to medical facilities, and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Perform various functions associated with ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of inmates, including meal preparation, provision of clothing and bedding, and coordination of visitation and telephone communications.
  • Maintain security of the facility, perform periodic security checks, and monitor video surveillance equipment.
  • Respond to emergencies, provide first aid and CPR when needed, and conduct release of prisoners per established procedures.
  • Communicate with staff, inmates, and visitors, and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED
  • No previous experience required, but some public relations experience in a similar jail or law enforcement environment is preferred
  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and a U.S. Citizen or resident status
  • Must pass and maintain certifications in NCIC, Basic Jail Officer, Juvenile Specifics, Firearm qualification, basic first-aid, and FEMA NIMS Incident Command
