San Diego, California, United States ASML Full time

Job Overview:

ASML US, LP is at the forefront of innovation in the field of lithography technology, bringing together exceptional talent in science and engineering to create advanced machines essential for the production of high-performance microchips.

Our organization is dedicated to the design, development, integration, marketing, and servicing of these sophisticated systems, which empower our clients—leading semiconductor manufacturers—to enhance the compactness and functionality of their microchips, resulting in more efficient consumer electronics.

With our headquarters located in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, we operate across multiple locations in the United States, including key offices in Wilton, CT, Chandler, AZ, San Jose, CA, and San Diego, CA.

The Development and Engineering (D&E) sector is tasked with the specification, design, and integration of ASML's machinery. Within this sector, the Mechanical Development department (MDEV) is responsible for specifying designs and ensuring the functional integration of various modules and architectures related to critical hardware components.

The EUV lithography light source machine at ASML begins with a comprehensive understanding of functional requirements, leading to the derivation of specifications and oversight of design quality.

Key Responsibilities:

We are seeking an engineer with a robust background in mechanical hardware and systems to fulfill the role of Mechanical Architect for specific components of the EUV light source.

In this capacity, you will:

  • Define mechanical requirements encompassing structural, flow, thermal, and other critical parameters.
  • Establish cross-functional interfaces, configuration strategies, and validation criteria for various EUV source modules.
  • Collaborate with fellow architects and design engineers within a multidisciplinary project team to develop innovative concepts, conduct engineering analyses, and support the construction and testing of prototypes.
  • Guide the generation of detailed CAD designs and engineering drawings, while partnering with suppliers and product integration teams to ensure successful product launches.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive roadmap, requirements, specifications, architecture, and technology development needs for the Mechanical Architecture of EUV Source modules, aimed at enhancing hardware longevity, mean time to repair (MTTR), mean time between failures (MTBF), and overall system availability.
  • Identify innovative concepts to address performance deficiencies, assess technology maturity, and outline the development and engineering work breakdown for execution by cross-functional teams of experienced scientists and engineers.
  • Lead the definition of architecture and prototyping, collaborating with mechanical engineers, materials scientists, optical, electrical, and software engineers to devise solutions aligned with the roadmap.
  • Draft and review key specification and design documentation, coordinating essential reviews with Systems Engineering and Project Stakeholders to ensure alignment of functional specifications with system requirements.
  • Engage third-party entities for the development of technological solutions, creating Statements of Work (SOWs) to define phased deliverables for budgeting and project management.
  • Establish test protocols, analyze test data, and provide recommendations based on test outcomes to enhance the performance of sub-modules.
  • Evaluate technology and project risks, defining strategies for risk mitigation in collaboration with the project leadership team.
  • Mentor and oversee the activities of junior engineers.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a BS or MS in Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field, along with a minimum of 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role. Previous experience in technology, process, and/or engineering design of semiconductor processing equipment is highly advantageous.

Essential skills include:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in translating and statistically analyzing data, effectively reporting issues through written and graphical formats.
  • Strong customer service skills, with a deep understanding of relationship building.
  • Competence in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic email systems.
  • A proven track record of successfully leading projects from conception to production.
  • Experience in project engineering, including leading small technical teams.
  • A strong foundational knowledge in mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics.
  • Familiarity with heat transfer analysis and methodologies.
  • Experience with materials in extreme environments and interactions with liquid metals is desirable.
  • Knowledge of thermal and gas flow elements in process chamber design.

Work Environment:

The physical demands of this role require the ability to sit, walk, talk, hear, and use hands for various tasks. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be necessary, and travel may be required based on business needs. The position may involve working in a clean room environment, necessitating adherence to specific gowning protocols.
