Our expert surgeons perform a comprehensive range of cardiac surgeries, including both elective and emergency procedures for conditions such as heart valve disease, aortic aneurysms, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, heart failure, Marfan syndrome, and other rare disorders.

This role encompasses participation in heart and lung transplant procedures. As a First Assistant, you will collaborate closely with the surgeon and/or fellow or senior resident during cardiovascular and thoracic operations. Your responsibilities will include assisting in critical tasks during surgeries, such as coronary anastomosis, vein harvesting, and suturing. A thorough review of perioperative data for each case with staff surgeons is an integral part of this position.

**Key Responsibilities:**

  • Assist the surgeon and/or senior resident in thoracic and cardiovascular surgical interventions.
  • Support the surgeon during procedures including coronary anastomosis, prosthetic valve implantation, and aneurysm resections.
  • Act as the surgical scheduling officer for the department.
  • Review preoperative patient information with each staff surgeon.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

**Qualifications:**

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program with valid state licensure.
  • Registered Nurses (RN) must possess Certification as a Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) and have completed the Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) course.
  • Certification as RN First Assistant (CRNFA) is preferred, or a Master of Science in Nursing degree.

**Work Complexity:**

  • This role requires critical thinking, decisive judgment, and the ability to operate with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to thrive in a high-pressure environment is essential.

**Experience Requirements:**

  • A minimum of one year of experience in an operating room setting is required.

**Physical Demands:**

  • Manual dexterity to operate necessary equipment.
  • May involve extended periods of standing, walking, or sitting.
  • Good visual acuity, either naturally or corrected, is necessary.
  • Medium Work - Ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
