Boston, Massachusetts, United States Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Full time
Job Overview

About Us:
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) stands as a strategic and reliable partner in the insurance sector, offering a comprehensive suite of commercial property, casualty, and specialty insurance solutions along with exceptional service to clients and brokers globally. As part of Berkshire Hathaway's esteemed insurance operations, we leverage our reputable brand, robust financial standing, and the expertise of our dedicated global team to deliver outstanding results.

Our organization is grounded in core values such as respect, integrity, excellence, collaboration, and passion, which shape our identity and business practices. We celebrate diverse backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints, fostering an inclusive environment that empowers every team member to contribute and be acknowledged. We are united in our mission to cultivate a workplace culture where all individuals can thrive.

Role and Reporting Structure:

The Senior Vice President of Information Technology will spearhead BHSI's initiatives to leverage technological resources in alignment with our business goals. This role encompasses the planning, design, implementation, and enhancement of the company's enterprise technology strategy, overseeing the global application, infrastructure, and cybersecurity domains. With a significant IT budget, the SVP will collaborate with global business leaders to identify automation needs, develop strategic initiatives, facilitate IT governance, ensure the successful execution of diverse technology projects, and nurture a high-performing IT organization.

This position is part of BHSI's executive leadership team, engaging weekly with the CEO, and reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer while leading a team of approximately 700 professionals, including BHSI employees and global contractors.

Key Responsibilities:

The SVP is responsible for adopting a strategic business perspective towards technology opportunities, anticipating technological trends, and driving both immediate and long-term solutions. Key responsibilities include:

  • Building a cohesive, efficient, and high-performing IT organization that integrates internal BHSI staff and external resources, including oversight of workforce planning, talent acquisition, organizational structure, and personnel development.
  • Collaborating with global business and functional leaders to align technology investments with business objectives, employing innovative problem-solving to prioritize commitments effectively.
  • Encouraging innovation within the IT organization, fostering a culture of inquiry, continuous improvement, and learning from past experiences.
  • Formulating the annual IT budget, managing expenditures, and maintaining a comprehensive understanding of budget components and trends.
  • Overseeing the operation and ongoing enhancement of our global network and computing platforms, including hardware, mobile devices, networks, applications, databases, and collaboration tools.
  • Ensuring that IT projects are executed with clear expectations, detailed planning, and transparency.
  • Developing and managing relationships with key IT partners and vendors, promoting mutually beneficial synergies that enhance BHSI's ability to meet business objectives.
  • Ensuring compliance with necessary processes and IT disciplines to safeguard the organization and its assets, focusing on audit requirements, data privacy, cybersecurity, and global regulatory standards.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in leading large, multidisciplinary IT organizations with a global presence.
A solid understanding of the Commercial Insurance industry and experience in addressing global business challenges are essential. The ability to build credibility with global business and functional leaders is also crucial.

Proven leadership, people management, and organizational development skills are required.
This role is accountable for fostering the growth of the IT organization while integrating resources from BHSI, consulting vendors, and solution providers. The SVP must be adept at navigating a matrixed environment while maintaining strong accountability.

Effective communication and collaboration skills are essential.
This includes the ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels, complemented by outstanding leadership capabilities and a collaborative approach to planning.

Experience in providing technical and architectural oversight for complex computing platforms is necessary.
This encompasses cloud computing, development architectures, SaaS solutions, network infrastructure, and collaboration tools. While not required to be an expert in these areas, the SVP should facilitate technical assessments, evaluate project plans, and identify interdependencies.

The successful candidate will have a track record of success as a change agent, experience managing complex and often competing objectives, and a solid background in IT governance, planning, budgeting, and portfolio management. They should be a hands-on executive who brings cultural awareness and a company-first mindset to BHSI.

BHSI Offers:

  • A competitive compensation and benefits package along with exciting growth opportunities for career-oriented individuals.
  • A dynamic, action-oriented, and values-driven environment focused on doing the right thing for our customers, teammates, and stakeholders.
  • A non-bureaucratic organization that values simplicity over complexity and emphasizes individual excellence within a team framework.
