The Tape Solutions R&D division at Saint-Gobain North America is on the lookout for a skilled and seasoned researcher with a focus on polymers, tasked with the design and development of silicone products within our extensive product range. This role involves spearheading and executing initiatives in silicone material formulation, processing, and scaling up for industrial applications. The ideal candidate will possess profound knowledge and experience in polymer science and engineering, capable of independently designing and conducting rigorous, reliable, and defensible scientific R&D activities aimed at evaluating and enhancing the performance and cost-effectiveness of existing products, as well as innovating new products. Additionally, the candidate should have a passion for learning, problem-solving, and potentially creating new processes and technologies. A collaborative mindset is essential, as the candidate will engage with others to streamline development and decision-making processes.

KEY COMPETENCIES:
  • Employs a comprehensive technical background and experience to develop and/or enhance silicone products, processes, and performance while minimizing costs.
  • Strong foundation in silicone chemistry, formulation, processing, and characterization, with a deep understanding of silicone elastomer structure-property relationships to facilitate new product development that meets specific functional requirements.
  • Experience in rubber processing techniques such as compounding, foaming, extrusion, calendering, and coating.
  • Demonstrated success in the development of new materials, products, and processes, with a proven ability to quickly grasp new concepts and technologies. Proficiency in statistical data analysis and Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies.
  • Oversees projects from initial concept through to scale-up, supporting pilot-scale processes and ensuring alignment between laboratory and pilot processes with manufacturing operations.
  • Comfortable working both autonomously and as part of a team, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deliver results within tight timelines and budget constraints.
  • Exceptional communicator capable of conveying technical information to individuals from diverse backgrounds, leveraging knowledge to advance projects and identify productive synergies. Proficient in utilizing business language in an industrial context and coordinating with operational teams.
  • Documents achievements in clear and coherent technical reports and presentations.
  • Exhibits a strong commitment to the safe and responsible handling of chemicals and environmental considerations.
Is this position a good fit for you?
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 7+ years of experience, or a Master's degree with 3+ years of experience, along with demonstrated technical judgment and accomplishments, or an entry-level PhD in Polymer Science/Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Organic Chemistry, Plastic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience with silicone elastomers is highly advantageous.
  • A background in rubber processing is preferred.
