Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Substation Engineering Lead to join our team at National Grid USA. As a key member of our Intelligent Subs Design & Standards department, you will play a critical role in reviewing, updating, and developing substation standards to support substation capital projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development, technical content, and implementation of National Grid's Substation Engineering and Design philosophy, standards, guidelines, equipment specifications, and procedures.
  • Provide technical support to various departments, including Engineering, Design, Operations, IT, and Construction.
  • Ensure that design to value is consistently incorporated through standardization and provide a high level of customer service.
  • Engage Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in technical discussions to facilitate the development of standards and trainings.
  • Attend and participate in conferences and seminars to stay up-to-date on new technologies and industry standards.
  • Resolve technical issues that may arise in updating and development of standards.
  • Perform complex calculations and studies to support substation standards design basis.
  • Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of technical problems, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations.
  • Review and approve single lines, elementaries, physicals, conduit and cable schedules, lighting, lightning, bill of materials, and manufacturers' drawings.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers and other personnel.
  • Research and support the adoption of new and innovative technologies for the substation business.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering school. Master's degree desirable.
  • Six or more years of experience in an engineering field related to power systems, engineering, and/or operations and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with SAP, CDEGS, Bentley Microstation, AUTO-CAD, Microsoft Project, Primavera, Tableau, PowerPlan, Cascade, and/or other similar software tools.
  • Good working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and existing electrical design codes, including but not limited to: substation construction and maintenance practices, electric utility practices, substation materials and equipment, grounding and lightning study analysis, IEEE, ANSI, NFPA 70, ASTM, NEC, NESC, and NE Building Code.
  • Ability to physically navigate in and around an electrical substation.
  • Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy.
  • Able to travel throughout service territories and willing to work extended hours when the job requires.
