Substation Engineering Manager, Standards and Design

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Lead Engineer to join our Intelligent Subs Design & Standards department in Northborough, Mass. This is a hybrid role with approximately 1-2 days a week in the office. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the development, technical content, and implementation of National Grid's Substation Engineering and Design philosophy, standards, guidelines, equipment specifications, and procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the development and implementation of substation standards and guidelines to support substation capital projects, including distribution and transmission interconnections projects, and emerging technologies.
- Provide technical support to various departments, including Engineering, Design, Operations, IT, and Construction.
- Ensure that design to value is consistently incorporated through standardization and provide a high level of customer service.
- Engage with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to facilitate the development of standards and trainings.
- Attend and participate in conferences and seminars to stay up-to-date on new technologies and industry standards.
- Resolve technical issues that may arise in updating and development of standards.
- Perform complex calculations and studies to support substation standards design basis.
- Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of technical problems, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations.
- Review and approve single lines, elementaries, physicals, conduit and cable schedules, lighting, lightning, bill of materials, and manufacturers' drawings.
- Mentor and train junior engineers and other personnel.
- Research and support the adoption of new and innovative technologies for the substation business.
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering school. Master's degree desirable. Professional Engineering License desirable.
- Six or more years of experience in an engineering field related to power systems, engineering, and/or operations and maintenance.
- Familiarity with SAP, CDEGS, Bentley Microstation, AUTO-CAD, Microsoft Project, Primavera, Tableau, PowerPlan, Cascade, and/or other similar software tools.
- Good working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and existing electrical design codes, including but not limited to: substation construction and maintenance practices, electric utility practices, substation materials and equipment, grounding and lightning study analysis, IEEE, ANSI, NFPA 70, ASTM, NEC, NESC, and NE Building Code.
- Ability to physically navigate in and around an electrical substation.
- Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy.
- Able to travel throughout service territories and willing to work extended hours when the job requires.
