Position Overview

The Senior Water Systems Planner plays a crucial role in the strategic long-term planning of water and wastewater systems. This position involves recommending projects and solutions to address intricate challenges related to water supply sources, treatment processes, storage facilities, pumping systems, and the transmission of both water and wastewater.

Analysis and proposed solutions may significantly influence the operational efficiency and integrity of American Water's water and wastewater systems.

The Senior Water Systems Planner will oversee consulting Project Managers/Engineers and/or project support engineers or technicians, ensuring that projects align with the company’s objectives.

This role also includes conducting or reviewing evaluations of water system capacity and service, particularly in relation to service extension projects or potential growth opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and prepare comprehensive strategic planning studies for water and wastewater systems.
  • Develop and maintain asset investment plans and strategic capital expenditure plans that address operational needs and efficiencies.
  • Conduct system capacity evaluations and analyze deficiencies in source, treatment, distribution, collection, pumping, and storage systems.
  • Serve as a technical resource on matters related to water and wastewater system planning, including capital planning and demand projections.
  • Present engineering analysis results to various stakeholders, including regulatory agencies and senior management.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong project and program management capabilities.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in written and verbal communication, with experience in report writing and presentations.
  • Ability to foster collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated financial analysis skills, including budget management and business modeling.

Experience and Education

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in water resources planning.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required; an advanced management or technical degree is preferred.

Travel Requirements
Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time.

Certifications
Professional Engineering (PE) license is required.

Work Environment
This position is primarily office-based, with occasional fieldwork at water and wastewater facilities for site investigations and project meetings.
