Position Summary:

The Railcar Maintenance Technician I role at Northern Plains Railroad, Inc. involves working under the guidance of a more experienced technician or supervisor to develop the necessary skills and knowledge for effective railcar repair and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Apply stenciling for identification on railcars.
  • Utilize impact wrenches or hydraulic bolt fasteners for securing components.
  • Perform removal and installation of brake assemblies and shoes.
  • Handle the uncoupling lever replacement.
  • Execute repairs or replacements of structural components such as side posts, rafters, and piping using welding and hand tools.
  • Conduct gasket, air hose, and train line repairs as needed.
  • Adjust or replace grab irons, handholds, and steps on railcars.
  • Maintain and repair air brake systems and associated fittings.
  • Replace couplers and draft gears as required.
  • Prepare surfaces of railcars for painting.
  • Repair freight car structures through various methods including burning and patching.
  • Manipulate heavy equipment or components during repair processes.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Learn to operate track mobile equipment and assist as a groundman.
Required Competencies:

Successful candidates should demonstrate the following:

  • A solid mechanical background, with familiarity in safety regulations and operational rules.
  • Experience in welding and machinery is advantageous.
  • Ability to apply rational problem-solving techniques in varied situations.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting safety guidelines and mechanical instructions.

Education and Training:
