Reports To: Principal

Position Summary

The Student Support Specialist role is crafted to enhance the social, emotional, and academic growth of students by facilitating ongoing social-emotional education, counseling, and linking students and families to essential school and community services. This position entails observing and evaluating students' social and emotional development to strengthen their coping mechanisms, enhance their social interactions, and promote their overall well-being. Furthermore, the role includes collaborating with school leadership to support the educational vision and align with the institution's objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Advocates for the school's mission by delivering support and showcasing skills in counseling, crisis management, resource linkage, and student advocacy essential for fostering student well-being.
  • Connects families with community resources and ensures they are effectively linked to the necessary support.
  • Oversees the execution of the school's comprehensive support framework through diligent monitoring and assessment.
  • Conducts informal evaluations and provides constructive feedback to educators and families, aiding in the integration of new students.
  • Facilitates support groups and collaborates with educators to implement strategies for social-emotional education.
  • Tracks students' social and emotional development and organizes interventions based on assessments.
  • Analyzes student data and suggests adjustments to support strategies.
  • Utilizes observations and data to identify professional development needs for staff regarding social-emotional education and designs and delivers tailored training.
  • Assists in reviewing student support strategies and offers feedback to educators and staff.
  • Maintains regular attendance and is available to work on-site during standard business hours and as required.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned by the principal or district administration.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Familiarity with effective student support techniques and experience in planning impactful interventions.
  • Understanding of strategies that connect students to vital resources.
  • Ability to convey information and ideas clearly to students, families, and staff.
  • Proficiency in utilizing computer-based tracking and reporting systems.
  • Strong time management skills for handling multiple cases and responsibilities.
  • Capability to tailor support based on individual student needs and evaluate their progress.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with students, staff, and parents in a professional context.
  • Adaptability to various in-person and remote support settings.
  • Knowledge of safety and security protocols within educational environments.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Skill in redirecting discussions towards solutions and outcomes.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Master's degree in social work (MSW) or a related discipline from an accredited institution is mandatory.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:

  • Preferred: eligibility for a certificate issued by NYS Professional Standards.
