About the Role

AbbVie is seeking a highly skilled Associate Director to lead the development and execution of external communications programs that advance our U.S. Rheumatology portfolio. As a strategic thinker and communicator, you will be responsible for managing a broad range of internal and external stakeholders across mid-to-high levels of management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute high-impact public affairs programs to advance business objectives, emphasizing competitive differentiation, analytics, and the external environment.
  • Secure timely buy-in and input from functional and franchise leaders on Public Affairs programs, including securing budget to effectively execute programs.
  • Oversee and implement tactical program elements, ensuring deliverables are met on time and on budget across paid, earned, shared, and owned channels.
  • Serve as communications counselor to franchise leadership, ensuring programs are creatively developed and executed with the external environment in mind.
  • Lead data communications at U.S. medical congresses to differentiate AbbVie's on-market rheumatology brands and elevate the pipeline among key external stakeholders.
  • Represent Business Unit Communications and Public Affairs on Integrated Brand Teams and proactively contribute to business decisions with cross-functional business partners.
  • Partner with patient and professional advocacy organizations to advance the understanding of rheumatic conditions.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the U.S. media environment and have advanced media relations experience and skills to ensure effective engagement with reporters.
  • Serve as spokesperson for designated U.S. rheumatology brands.
  • Manage issues that affect the business overall by proactively anticipating and mitigating reputational risk to AbbVie and immunology brands, and work with the Director to influence decisions on key business issues.
  • Drive agency partner performance and ensure effective use of AbbVie resources.
  • Ensure programs fall within budget parameters and all administrative paperwork is completed in an appropriate manner (invoice logging, purchase orders, statements of work, etc.).
  • Ensure compliance by managing the review process for external communications materials (press releases, statements, response documents, fact sheets, etc.).
  • Keep appropriate internal and external partners apprised of status, timelines, and directional shifts to ensure smooth review process and meet corporate deadlines.
  • Consistently share best practices and offer new ideas and thinking to raise the bar for the Global Therapeutics Communications and Public Affairs organization.
Requirements
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required, with an emphasis in communications, public relations, journalism, or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 8+ years of relevant experience and a proven track record of success in developing and executing corporate and/or product communications and/or public relations, including media relations and social media/digital work.
  • Experience in the healthcare/bio-pharma industry is preferred but not required. Strong business acumen with the ability to anticipate company and team needs, including a strong understanding of the US healthcare system functioning and intricacies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with knowledge of emerging communications trends and technologies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate in a matrix environment and serve as the functional representative on multiple teams.
  • Manage difficult conversations through direct and constructive dialogue.
  • Quick learner, grasps the 'essence' and can change course quickly where indicated; raises the bar and is never satisfied with the status quo; creates a learning environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement.
