Position Overview

The role of the Custodian Level II involves performing essential custodial upkeep and occasional outdoor maintenance tasks to ensure the facility remains clean and secure. This position is accountable for executing designated responsibilities as specified in the custodial task sheet.

Key Responsibilities
Deliver comprehensive cleaning services during shifts to uphold cleanliness standards for visitors and staff at the Science Museum of Minnesota. Provide outstanding customer service, maintain clear communication, and actively engage in adhering to safety and cleaning protocols.

The Custodian Level II is tasked with a wide array of cleaning responsibilities within the museum. This includes manual cleaning and the safe operation of various large-scale cleaning equipment such as push, backpack, walk-behind, and riding vacuums, burnishers, scrubbers, extractors, Kaivac washers, and pressure washers.

Additional equipment responsibilities may involve trash compactors and occasional snow removal using shovels and snow blowers as required.

Daily Duties Include:
- Maintaining the museum's cleanliness to meet high standards acceptable to visitors and staff.
- Performing cleaning tasks such as restroom sanitation, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, restocking supplies, and emptying waste, recycling, and compost bins.
- Assisting the grounds department with tasks like shoveling, ice management, snow removal, litter collection, and exterior waste disposal as directed.

Report any damages, repairs, or vandalism to a custodial lead or manager and utilize the service ticket system for necessary repairs. Ensure equipment is maintained by cleaning it daily and adhering to manufacturer guidelines. Promptly report any malfunctions or breakdowns.

Follow all safety protocols to complete tasks in compliance with applicable safety standards, regulations, and internal procedures. Maintain an adequate supply of cleaning materials and ensure proper storage of custodial chemicals and supplies.

Communicate any supply needs to a custodial lead or manager. Understand safety protocols regarding chemicals (SDS), hazardous communications, personal protective equipment (PPE), and bloodborne pathogens.

Maintain the security of the facility, including storage areas such as custodial closets. Assist with the coordination and execution of various events, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for all participants. Occasionally assist with event setup and breakdown.

Exhibit respectful and courteous behavior towards internal and external customers and colleagues. Monitor assigned work email and stay informed of all workplace communications. Respond to inquiries from supervisors and museum leadership.

Complete daily checklists and special projects, communicating progress with lead custodians and managers to finalize shift reports. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Ability to read and write in English.
Experience: Previous custodial experience is required.

Work Environment: Ability to work indoors and outdoors, including during inclement weather. Must be able to walk long distances and stand for extended periods, perform bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, twisting, and frequent repetitive motions. Capable of using power tools and equipment that may vibrate. Ability to professionally clean bodily fluid spills and work at heights up to 20 feet using a lift. Must be able to push and pull up to 200 pounds occasionally and carry up to 50 pounds short distances.
