Food Safety Supervisor

Position Overview: This role entails overseeing the operational activities within the Department of Food and Consumer Safety. The individual will provide essential guidance, training, and support to team members, ensuring adherence to quality assurance standards and conducting performance evaluations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise a team of Environmental Health Specialists and program specialists, offering leadership and direction.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, including annual assessments and recommendations for promotions and disciplinary actions.
  • Review inspection reports and staff activities to ensure compliance with departmental standards.
  • Perform quality assurance tasks, including joint inspections and evaluations of operational activities.
  • Ensure effective risk-based inspections are conducted, focusing on minimizing foodborne illness risks.
  • Collaborate with EHS staff to ensure compliance and initiate enforcement actions when necessary.
  • Manage a specialized food safety program area, providing expertise and delegating responsibilities.
  • Coordinate training for new employees, ensuring alignment with departmental objectives and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in the recruitment process by interviewing and recommending candidates for vacant positions.
  • Lead coordinated responses during public health emergencies, including foodborne illness outbreaks.
  • Engage in public health emergency preparedness exercises as directed.
  • Participate in community health events as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assume leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Administrator or other Team Leaders.
  • Be available outside of regular business hours to support staff as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree is preferred.
  • Three to five years of experience in retail food regulation or environmental health.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Licenses/Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license and personal vehicle required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information effectively.
  • Knowledge of public management principles relevant to departmental operations.
  • Familiarity with food safety regulations and standards.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to achieve departmental goals.
  • Capability to perform under stress and manage challenging interactions.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications and inspection software.
Working Environment:
  • Involves prolonged periods of sitting and regular use of computer equipment.
  • Occasional physical activity required during inspections.
  • Exposure to varying environmental conditions during fieldwork.
  • May involve working with cleaning chemicals and other potentially hazardous materials.
  • Flexibility to work outside regular hours as needed.
  • Driving required for field inspections in diverse weather conditions.
  • Moderate physical lifting may be necessary.
  • Ability to interact with the public in various situations.
