Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator/Director and in alignment with the YMCA of Southwest Florida's policies, the Aquatic Safety Officer is tasked with ensuring the well-being of all individuals utilizing the YMCA pool facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Familiarizes and reviews all emergency protocols, responding to urgent situations promptly in accordance with YMCA guidelines. Completes necessary documentation as required.
  • Maintains vigilant observation of the swimming area.
  • Fosters positive and effective relationships with members, participants, and fellow staff.
  • Exhibits a professional demeanor at all times, adhering to dress code requirements (approved swimwear, jacket, and shirt).
  • Understands and consistently enforces safety regulations, policies, and guidelines for the aquatic environment. Ensures all participants are dressed in suitable swim attire and footwear.
  • Ensures that novice swimmers undergo swim assessments and utilize appropriate flotation devices as needed. Refers any medical concerns to the Aquatics Director for further evaluation.
  • Strives to uphold a high standard of cleanliness in the pool area, including decks, structures, and equipment.
  • Keeps accurate records as mandated by the YMCA and/or state health regulations.
  • Secures a replacement guard when unable to fulfill scheduled shifts and completes necessary paperwork.
  • Conducts equipment inspections and ensures availability of necessary supplies. Reports any maintenance issues to the Aquatics Director immediately.
  • Assesses the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival.
  • Performs chemical testing at designated times throughout the day and takes appropriate actions.
  • Participates in all required staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Utilizes the time clock and monitors timesheets, addressing any discrepancies with the supervisor promptly.
  • Responsible for adhering to all staff safety protocols, including cleaning procedures throughout the day as required by the department.
  • Completes additional tasks as assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Successfully pass the State of Florida Criminal History Background Check and comply with the Association's background screening policies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to a drug/alcohol/smoke-free workplace.
  • Demonstrated sound decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to maintain a certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must exhibit lifeguard competencies in accordance with YMCA, Red Cross, or other nationally recognized lifeguarding standards.
  • Professional appearance and attitude are essential.

Certifications and Training Requirements:

  • CPR for the Rescue Professional/First Aid/AED Certifications are mandatory.
  • Current YMCA, Red Cross, or other nationally recognized lifeguarding certification, along with corresponding CPR/AED and First Aid requirements.
  • Completion of the YMCA's Blood Borne Pathogens Training annually.
  • Annual completion of the YMCA's Child Sexual Abuse Prevention training.
  • Adherence to Staff Safety Requirements/Cleaning Protocols.
  • Participation in additional training sessions as recommended by the Supervisor.

Compensation:
$17.58/hour
