Job Summary

The YMCA of Southwest Florida is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Lifeguard to join our team. As a Lifeguard, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all participants in or around the YMCA pool.

Key Responsibilities
  • Emergency Response: Know and review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Pool Surveillance: Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area to ensure a safe environment for all participants.
  • Customer Service: Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff to provide excellent customer service.
  • Appearance and Attire: Display professional appearance at all times and dress according to requirements (approved swimsuit, jacket, and shirt).
  • Safety Rules and Guidelines: Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • First Aid and Medical Response: Make sure that first-time swimmers are swim-tested and wear appropriate flotation devices as necessary. Refer any medical conditions that require further investigation or physician's approval to the Aquatics Director.
  • Cleanliness and Maintenance: Work to maintain a high level of cleanliness of the deck, structures, equipment, and surrounding areas.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Equipment Checks: Perform equipment checks and ensure that all necessary equipment is available and in good working condition.
  • Pool Hazard Identification: Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and report any issues to the Aquatics Director.
  • Chemical Testing: Perform chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and take appropriate action.
  • Staff Meetings and Training: Attend all staff meetings and training as required to stay up-to-date on YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Time Management: Utilize the time clock and monitor timesheets to ensure accurate record-keeping and reporting.
  • Additional Duties: Perform additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor to support the YMCA's mission and goals.
Requirements
  • Age Requirement: Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Criminal Background Check: Successfully complete a State of Florida Criminal History Background Check and meet the Association's policies on background screening.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Workplace Policy: Adhere to the YMCA's drug/alcohol/smoke-free workplace policy.
  • Decision Making: Sound decision-making skills.
  • Physical and Mental Readiness: Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
  • Lifeguarding Certification: Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA, Red Cross, or other nationally recognized lifeguarding program standards.
  • Professional Appearance: Professional appearance and attitude.
Certifications and Training Requirements
  • CPR and First Aid: CPR for the Rescue Professional/First Aid/AED Certifications required.
  • Lifeguarding Certification: Current YMCA, Red Cross, or other nationally recognized lifeguarding certification and corresponding requirements for CPR/AED and First Aid.
  • Annual Training: Completion of the YMCA's Blood Borne Pathogens Training annually and the YMCA's Child Sexual Abuse Prevention training annually.
  • Staff Safety Requirements: Completion of the YMCA's Staff Safety Requirements/Cleaning Protocols.
  • Additional Training: Additional training classes as recommended by the Supervisor.
