Culinary Support Specialist I

Overview:
This essential role involves the preparation and serving of both hot and cold food items, adhering to the standards set forth by the Norfolk Public School District, USDA, and relevant local, state, and federal regulations within a school environment or central kitchen.
Key Responsibilities:
This position encompasses a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
1. Delivering outstanding customer service to students and staff.
2. Managing incoming deliveries and ensuring proper stock rotation.
3. Preparing and portioning food items in accordance with the Quality Instruction Guide.
4. Setting up serving areas with all necessary meal components in an appealing manner.
5. Safely serving food during designated meal times.
6. Effectively utilizing and tracking School Nutrition Inventory.
7. Accurately recording meal counts using paper documentation and/or computerized point-of-sale systems, including processing payments for a la carte sales when assigned.
8. Cleaning and sanitizing kitchenware, utensils, appliances, and equipment following standard operating procedures.
9. Maintaining cleanliness of prep tables and cafeteria areas.
10. Sweeping and mopping kitchen floors.
11. Packing transport boxes for food distribution when assigned to the central kitchen.
12. Participating in School Nutrition marketing initiatives and nutrition education programs.
13. Acting as the primary contact for daily kitchen operations in the absence of the School Nutrition Manager.
14. Assisting the School Nutrition Manager with the orientation, coaching, and training of new personnel.
15. Completing annual professional standards training as mandated by USDA and the Norfolk Public School District.
Qualifications:
A minimum of one year of experience in food service and/or customer service is required. A valid Food Handler's card issued by the local health department is necessary prior to commencing work and must be maintained throughout employment. Previous experience in School Nutrition is preferred, along with any equivalent combination of education and experience.
