An exciting opportunity awaits for a skilled Senior Scientist specializing in AAV Gene Therapy to become a part of the In Vitro Pharmacology team within the Institute of Medicine (IOM) at Altos Labs. We are looking for a highly driven, innovative, and collaborative individual who is committed to leveraging their expertise to restore cellular health and resilience and combat disease. In this role, you will collaborate with a vibrant team in a unique setting where leading research laboratories partner with industry scientists. Your contributions will be pivotal in deepening our understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying rejuvenation and aging, supporting target validation efforts. Furthermore, you will engage in our drug discovery initiatives by selecting drug candidates and supporting a diverse array of early exploratory and drug-discovery projects. Your expertise will be instrumental in advancing our mission to significantly impact the fields of aging, rejuvenation biology, and drug discovery.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate within the In Vitro Pharmacology team and engage closely with other Altos IOM functions to conduct essential experiments and meet project objectives and timelines.
- Act as the lead scientist responsible for developing and optimizing in vitro and cellular assays for AAV.
- Provide expertise in bioanalytical assay development specifically for AAV gene therapy.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in AAV vector design and optimization.
- Oversee collaborations with contract research organizations (CROs) for AAV vector optimization and testing.
- Work closely with the In Vivo Pharmacology team on AAV delivery in vivo and nonclinical studies.
- Collaborate with process development and analytical development teams in Technical Operations to identify processes and assays that align with downstream operations.
- Analyze data, interpret results, troubleshoot issues, and apply statistical and data analysis techniques to validate and enhance assays.
- Operate and maintain essential laboratory instruments relevant to assays.
Who You Are
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, Pharmacology, or a related field with a minimum of 6 years post-PhD experience and at least 3 years in the industry.
- Proven ability to independently formulate scientific inquiries, design strategies, and implement plans effectively.
- Strong knowledge of AAV capsid/serotype, promoter, transgene, and backbone elements.
- Expertise in one or more AAV vectors and experience in re-engineering AAV to enhance potency, transgene properties, or packaging capacity.
- Extensive wet-lab experience in AAV analytics and titration methods (e.g., genomic titer by ddPCR, particle titer by ELISA, infectious titer as TCID50), along with potency assessment for transgene mRNA and protein.
- Significant experience in developing and optimizing biochemical and cellular assays, with a robust background in relevant laboratory techniques and methodologies.
- Extensive experience in developing and optimizing bioanalytical assays for AAV gene therapy, including evaluation of vector genome levels and transgene expression in various tissues.
- Demonstrated high productivity and ability to complete work efficiently.
- Proficient in documenting laboratory procedures and experimental data accurately and promptly using electronic lab notebooks (ELN).
- Excellent writing and presentation skills, capable of tailoring communication to diverse audiences, from senior executives to entry-level employees.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred candidates will have strong experience in the following areas:
- Experience across various therapeutic modalities, including small molecules, biotherapeutics, nucleic acid therapeutics, and gene therapy.
- Expertise in viral and non-viral gene therapy delivery technologies, in addition to AAV.
- Experience in pre-clinical biomarker discovery, development, and assay validation.
- Experience with cellular models of diverse age-related conditions, including metabolic, musculoskeletal, immune-related, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases.
- Strong background in aging and rejuvenation biology.
Compensation Information
The salary range for this position:
- Senior Scientist I: $121,550 - $164,450
- Senior Scientist II: $143,000 - $199,200
Compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
