Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of nursing staff, providing guidance and support to ensure high-quality patient care.
  • Assist in the recruitment and hiring process for nursing positions, ensuring a strong team dynamic.
  • Onboard and orient new staff members, providing ongoing coaching and mentoring to ensure a smooth transition.
  • Manage staff assignments and productivity, establishing clear expectations and deliverables.
  • Support charge nurses and staff to provide adequate coverage based on unit census, patient acuity, and unit activity.
  • Conduct annual evaluations and implement corrective action as needed for assigned staff.
  • Maintain open communication with the Patient Care Manager regarding staff development and performance.
  • Apprise and educate staff on new or changed regulations, policies, and procedures, ensuring compliance.
  • Design work processes and direct work performance to ensure compliance with all rules, regulations, accreditation standards, and laws.
  • Model good safety habits, considering safety when making decisions and scheduling safety tasks into daily activities.
  • Coordinate nursing care to patients, aligning with unit philosophy, goals, and patient care priorities.
  • Assist the Patient Care Manager in developing, implementing, and evaluating patient care delivery systems.
  • Maintain clinical knowledge of the patient population, delegating and supporting patient care activities as needed.
  • Support the charge nurse in ensuring assignments are made considering patient acuity, staff competence, and skill development.
  • Establish processes to ensure equipment function, repair, and routine maintenance on a daily basis.
  • Act as a role model for clinical professional practice, as described in the Charter for Professional Nursing Practice.
  • Ensure optimal clinical outcomes through staff competency, orientation, and education programs.
  • Assist in identifying staff learning needs and developing education and competency plans consistent with unit, service line, and organization priorities.
  • Collaborate with preceptors to coordinate unit-based orientation and preceptor programs.
  • Collaborate with preceptors to coordinate the orientation plan and schedule for each employee, based on a baseline individual learning needs assessment.
  • Assist in coordinating students receiving clinical experience on the unit.
  • Continuously seek quality improvement and assist with ongoing quality improvement activities of the unit.
  • Facilitate the integration of findings, action plans, and follow-up of quality improvement activities into practice.
  • Support the use of quality and patient satisfaction data to improve care.
  • Work collaboratively with unit councils, other departments, and peers to identify and minimize barriers to providing coordinated excellent care.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or Associate's or Vocational degree in nursing, with related Bachelor's degree or active enrollment in a BSN/BAN program.
  • 3 to 7 years of experience in inpatient hospital nursing.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse - MN Board of Nursing required.
  • BLS Tier 1 - Basic Life Support - Multisource required.
  • ACLS required for identified units per hiring manager.
  • Certification in clinical specialty preferred.
