Quantum Computing Error Correction Specialist

Maryland City, Maryland, United States The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Full time

Position Overview
Are you an expert in quantum error correction with a passion for advancing error-resilient quantum computing? Do you thrive in a collaborative environment with a team of dedicated physicists, both experimental and theoretical? If so, we invite you to consider joining our innovative team at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).

Your Role
As a Quantum Computing Error Correction Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in expanding our research initiatives and enhancing ongoing projects in quantum error correction.

Key Responsibilities
In this position, you will:

  • Explore, refine, and innovate quantum error correcting codes (QECCs) utilizing relevant noise models and hardware characteristics.
  • Conduct modeling and trade-space analyses of QECCs.
  • Identify opportunities for optimization and scalability of QECCs tailored to specific quantum technology platforms.
  • Examine the transmission of low-level physical properties to errors in high-level logical operations and vice versa.
  • Collaborate with experimental teams to assess and measure critical performance metrics of physical qubits and QECC components, extrapolating this data to predict QECC performance.
  • Investigate the effects of quantum error correction performance on quantum algorithms.

Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you should meet the following criteria:

  • Possess a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of experience in quantum information science.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with traditional QECCs, such as repetition codes and surface codes.
  • Have experience in simulating and estimating resource requirements for quantum error correcting codes.
  • Be proficient in programming and software development.
  • Show a proven track record of research achievements and publications in quantum information science.
  • Be willing to travel occasionally for collaborations and conferences.
  • Be eligible to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and ultimately achieve TS/SCI+poly level clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
While not mandatory, the following qualifications will enhance your application:

  • In-depth knowledge of various QEC schemes and their trade-offs.
  • Experience with decoders and logical error simulations.
  • Familiarity with physical-level and device noise modeling.
  • Experience with quantum characterization, verification, and validation methods, including randomized benchmarking.
  • Extensive experience with existing QEC simulation and resource estimation tools.
  • Knowledge of additional error protection strategies, such as dynamical decoupling and quantum error mitigation.
  • Experience in high-performance computing environments.
  • A background in collaborating with experimental teams.
  • A strong record of impactful research contributions.
  • An active TS/SCI with Polygraph security clearance.
