JOB DESCRIPTIONThe role of Food Service Assistant I is essential for the purpose of preparing and distributing food items for consumption by students and school staff while ensuring that facilities are maintained in a hygienic condition.
Individuals in this position provide students and staff with clean and sanitary environments that directly contribute to the learning process. This role reports to the Director of Food Services.
Essential Functions- Organizes food and beverage items (e.g., arranging in steam tables, displaying, filling racks, etc.) to ensure availability for students and staff.
- Cleans utensils, equipment, and the food preparation and serving areas to maintain sanitary conditions.
- Collects payments for food items (e.g., cash, free/reduced meal offset, etc.) to secure funds for reimbursement of selected items.
- Inspects food items and/or supplies to verify quantities and specifications of orders and comply with health regulations.
- Loads carts to ensure food and/or beverage items are ready for delivery to various locations.
- Supervises student workers to provide guidance in their job responsibilities.
- Prepares daily item counts and reports to document items served.
- Prepares food and beverage items to meet mandated nutritional and projected meal requirements.
- Reconciles cash transactions and item counts to balance financial and inventory records.
- Responds to inquiries from students, staff, and the public regarding meal types and costs.
- Serves food items to meet nutritional requirements and requests from students and school personnel.
- Stocks food, condiments, and supplies, checking for expiration dates to maintain adequate inventory levels.
- Transports food items, supplies, and equipment to various school cafeterias and off-campus locations to ensure timely delivery.
Assists in the preparation of food items (e.g., main dishes, salads, fruits, sandwiches, desserts, etc.) to fulfill mandated nutritional and projected meal requirements. Collaborates with other personnel as needed to maintain an efficient and effective work environment.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to meet evolving job conditions. Specific skills include adherence to safety practices, operation of equipment used in large-scale food preparation, and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic mathematical calculations, read and follow instructions, and comprehend multi-step written and oral directives. Specific knowledge includes health standards and hazards, quantity cooking, cash handling, and safety practices.
ABILITY is necessary to schedule activities, collate data, and utilize basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is essential to work collaboratively with others in various circumstances and operate equipment using defined methods.
Specific abilities include working as part of a team, communicating effectively with diverse groups, and engaging with children.
Responsibility
Responsibilities encompass working under limited supervision following standardized practices and methods, providing information and advising others, and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units may be necessary to perform job functions, with ongoing opportunities to impact the organization's services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing job functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job entails 0% sitting, 50% walking, and 50% standing. The work is performed under conditions that may involve temperature extremes and some hazardous situations.

Job-related experience is preferred.

High School diploma or equivalent.
