Key Responsibilities

As a Heavy Equipment Operator, your responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Operating diverse heavy machinery to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel, and earth while executing tasks like excavation, backfilling, grading, or leveling earth according to project specifications.
  • Adjusting equipment attachments for optimal level, angle, or depth based on the specific work requirements and machinery utilized. Establishing rough grades within +/- 6 inches of specified levels.
  • Planning and coordinating small to medium-scale land management and earth-moving initiatives in compliance with applicable specifications and requirements.
  • Utilizing various surveying instruments (e.g., global positioning devices, transits, survey planes) to aid in project construction. Assisting with the installation or troubleshooting of new hardware and software, including GPS units and automatic leveling systems.
  • Operating additional equipment such as Off-Road Utility Vehicles (ORUVs), Snowmobiles, Amphibious Vehicles, and All-Terrain Vehicles, as well as trucks and trailers, which typically exceed a gross vehicle weight of 14,400 kilograms (32,000 pounds).
  • Managing agricultural tractors with auxiliary equipment for tasks including mowing, trail maintenance, and planting.
  • Applying herbicides and insecticides as necessary using various sprayers.
  • Performing routine maintenance on equipment, including checking fluids, lubricating, and conducting safety inspections.
  • Conducting repairs on motor vehicles, including replacing essential components and diagnosing malfunctions in small gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Maintaining a constant state of alertness while operating machinery to ensure safety and prevent injuries.
  • Keeping detailed maintenance records for all operated equipment.

  • Drug testing is mandatory prior to appointment.
  • A valid State driver's license may be required.
  • Uniform may be necessary.
  • A trial period may be mandated.
  • Registration for the Selective Service is required for individuals assigned male at birth.
  • A Commercial Driver's License is essential for this role.
  • Ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicators License within 12 months of employment is required.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the requirements outlined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupation. Although specific experience, education, or training is not mandated, applicants must demonstrate a minimum level of competency related to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire to be considered qualified.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Candidates must be capable of operating one or more types of heavy equipment on various terrains, performing minor maintenance and repair work, and following instructions to complete tasks effectively.
