Responsibilities
As a Heavy Equipment Operator, your responsibilities will encompass, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operate various types of heavy machinery to move, load, or manipulate materials such as soil, gravel, and sand while executing tasks related to construction, excavation, and land development.
- Adjust equipment attachments to ensure proper levels, angles, and depths according to project specifications.
- Plan and oversee small to medium-scale land management and earth-moving initiatives, adhering to relevant guidelines and requirements.
- Utilize diverse surveying instruments (e.g., GPS devices, transits) to aid in project construction and assist in the installation or troubleshooting of new technological systems.
- Operate additional machinery, including Off-Road Utility Vehicles, Snowmobiles, and various types of trucks, ensuring safe handling of vehicles exceeding 14,400 kilograms (32,000 pounds).
- Manage agricultural tractors and related equipment for maintenance and operational tasks such as mowing, planting, and trail upkeep.
- Apply herbicides and insecticides as necessary using various sprayers.
- Conduct routine maintenance on equipment, including fluid checks, lubrication, and safety inspections, as well as replacing worn components.
- Perform repairs on motor vehicles, including the replacement of essential parts and systems.
- Diagnose and repair small gasoline and diesel engines found in various equipment.
- Maintain vigilance while operating machinery to ensure safety and prevent accidents.
- Keep detailed maintenance logs for all equipment operated.
Conditions of Employment
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

- Eligibility documentation must be provided as per the requirements.
- Background investigation will determine suitability for employment.
- Drug testing is mandatory for selectees.
- A valid State driver's license may be required.
- Uniform may be required.
- A trial period may be necessary for selectees.
- Registration for the Selective Service is required for individuals assigned male at birth.
- A Commercial Driver's License is necessary for this role.
- Ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicators License within 12 months of employment is required.
Qualifications
Candidates must meet the requirements set forth by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupation. While no specific amount of experience is mandated, applicants must demonstrate a minimum level of competency relevant to the position.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Candidates must demonstrate the ability to operate heavy equipment on various terrains and perform minor maintenance tasks without extensive supervision.
