The Commonwealth of Virginia is dedicated to enhancing lives and communities through impactful education, research, and outreach initiatives. We invite applications for a grant-supported Postdoctoral Researcher position within our Center for Materials Research.

The successful candidate will undertake the following responsibilities:

1. Conduct scientific investigations in the fields of (nano)photonics and related materials.

2. Mentor and train students in research methodologies and support their individual projects.

3. Maintain laboratory equipment, perform minor repairs, install software, and liaise with service technicians.

4. Manage procurement of laboratory supplies and communicate effectively with vendors.

5. Prepare technical documentation and contribute to peer-reviewed research publications.

6. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols.

*This position is funded through grants, and ongoing employment is subject to funding availability.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Candidates should demonstrate expertise in (nano)photonics and (nano)photonics materials research.


Specifically, applicants should have knowledge in:
(i) Fabrication techniques (e.g., thin film deposition),
(ii) Experimental methods (e.g., optical characterization and laser spectroscopy), and
(iii) Theoretical modeling (e.g., analytical modeling, utilization of commercial software like COMSOL, and programming skills).


Evidence of research competency should be demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. Candidates should possess strong technical skills, including equipment maintenance and computer proficiency, along with effective communication abilities to interact constructively with students and colleagues.
