Job Objective: The Texas Historical Commission is seeking a dedicated full-time Museum Collections Registrar/Manager for the Iwo Jima Memorial Museum (IJMM) at the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, TX. This position is focused on overseeing a collection of significant artifacts pertaining to the Battle of Iwo Jima, including the original plaster sculpture utilized for the United States Marine Corps War Memorial.

Under the supervision of the Chief Curator, this role encompasses curatorial responsibilities aimed at preserving and enhancing the museum's collection in anticipation of forthcoming construction projects. Key tasks include managing inventory, maintaining documentation, overseeing database operations, and planning exhibits.

Essential Duties:

  • Oversee and coordinate inventory and registration processes
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive object collection records
  • Facilitate museum acquisitions and deaccessioning processes
  • Ensure security and optimal exhibit conditions
  • Collaborate with various departments within the Marine Military Academy

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in History, Museum Studies, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in collections management
  • Expertise in collections databases and museum operational policies
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and readiness to travel

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of preservation and management methodologies
  • Excellent communication and organizational capabilities
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Meticulous attention to detail and capacity to meet deadlines

Registration/Licensure: A valid driver's license is required

Physical Conditions: The role necessitates working in an office, outdoor settings, and museum repository, with exposure to various environmental factors. Physical activities include lifting, standing, and navigating uneven surfaces.
