About the Program: The California Emergency Response Corps (CERC) is a comprehensive statewide AmeriCorps initiative aimed at empowering Californians to improve their disaster preparedness and respond effectively to emergencies such as wildfires, floods, and earthquakes, as well as addressing food insecurity through local food banks. This program is part of a broader California Volunteers campaign designed to enhance emergency readiness in communities facing social isolation, economic hardship, language barriers, and food challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Commit to serving 40 hours weekly throughout the contract period.
  • Participate in mandatory training sessions, either in-person or online as required.
  • Be prepared to assist in statewide emergency operations for two weeks as directed.
  • Support nonprofit partner organizations in their missions and programs on a daily basis.
  • Engage in regular performance evaluations with CERC staff.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and communication regarding hours worked and activities performed.
  • Deliver community services focused on disaster preparedness education and alleviating food insecurity.
  • Work towards becoming a local emergency responder in collaboration with the American Red Cross.
  • Participate in all designated State/National Service Days.

Community Engagement:

  • Build and strengthen partnerships with local organizations and programs.
  • Represent the partner site and AmeriCorps programs at events and training sessions.
  • Conduct surveys and other measurable outreach activities.

Educational Outreach:

Members will lead community presentations and outreach initiatives in collaboration with local nonprofits to drive measurable changes in community preparedness behaviors.

Disaster Response Duties:

Members may be called upon to respond to disasters, providing essential support to organizations managing the response efforts. Deployments can occur on short notice and may last up to two weeks. Following each deployment, members and staff will conduct debriefings to share insights and enhance future response strategies.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency is required.
  • Local residency is necessary for daily service.
  • Two years of relevant professional or volunteer experience, or a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Availability to serve evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Willingness to deploy on short notice for disaster response.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Zoom, G Suite, and a readiness to learn new technologies.
  • Background checks will be conducted due to access to vulnerable populations.
  • A personal vehicle, valid California driver's license, and automobile insurance are required.

Service Commitment:

All members are expected to fulfill a 40-hour work week for the duration of their contract, typically Monday through Friday, with potential weekend service as required.
