ABOUT THE ROLE

VHB is expanding its team in Raleigh, NC, and is seeking a Senior Traffic Engineering Manager to enhance our Transportation division. Key Responsibilities:

The responsibilities outlined below encompass a wide range of services in design, operations, safety, and policy. The successful candidate may not need to possess extensive knowledge in all technical areas; instead, responsibilities may include some or all of the following based on the candidate's strengths and interests:

  • Oversee traffic engineering, transportation planning, and safety projects and contracts.
  • Conduct traffic safety and operational improvement assessments for specific intersections and corridors.
  • Lead the creation of traffic impact analyses (TIAs) and review TIAs on behalf of local governments.
  • Analyze traffic safety challenges and propose crash reduction strategies.
  • Perform field investigations to identify factors contributing to crashes and recommend suitable countermeasures.
  • Ensure quality and contribute to complex technical decisions across various multimodal transportation engineering projects.
  • Utilize in-depth knowledge of traffic signal design and operations.
  • Tackle community traffic engineering and safety challenges.
  • Manage projects related to the design of traffic control devices (signs, markings, signals) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
  • Prepare interchange justification, functional design, and access management reports.
  • Develop mobility solutions that accommodate all users, including motorists, cyclists, public transit riders, and pedestrians of varying ages and abilities.
  • Familiarity with North Carolina Department of Transportation traffic operations and safety policies.
  • Support the development of policy and design guidance documents for traffic, technology, and control devices.
  • Manage or assist with projects involving transportation technology, including innovative, technology-driven solutions to meet evolving transportation agency needs.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Exceptional communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal abilities.
  • Experience presenting to the public and at community meetings as part of project outreach.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work autonomously.
  • Understanding of effectively overseeing multidisciplinary projects and teams.
  • Experience in managing projects and marketing transportation services.
  • Motivated to lead and mentor team members.

Educational Background:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 11-15 years of professional experience in traffic engineering.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in North Carolina.
  • Strong background in traffic engineering and project management.
