ROLE SUMMARY

The Financial Controller plays a critical role in overseeing the internal control systems to ensure that all financial transactions are executed with proper authorization and that the company's assets are safeguarded. This position is responsible for ensuring that financial management reporting systems accurately reflect all financial data, thereby providing essential reports for informed management decisions. The Financial Controller serves as the primary financial advisor to the President, keeping them updated on the financial health of various projects. Additionally, this role manages automated information systems, including the acquisition and maintenance of hardware and software.

  • Autonomy and Decision Making: The Financial Controller has the authority to make necessary decisions to fulfill their responsibilities, provided these actions comply with applicable laws, regulations, and company policies, while adhering to ethical business practices.

KEY ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial results, including Profit & Loss statements, Work in Progress reports, and Budget Variance Reports, ensuring timely closure of monthly accounts and communication of results to the President.
  • Ensure accurate and timely billing to clients.
  • Monitor cash flow and investments on a daily basis.
  • Engage with the President and Project Managers to discuss the financial status of ongoing projects as necessary.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve computer-related issues; oversee the acquisition and maintenance of hardware and software.
  • Provide guidance and support to Project Managers and staff as required.
  • Supervise payroll processing and reporting.
  • Assist in creating presentations for management.
  • Participate in quarterly Advisory Board Meetings.
  • Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable operations.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of subordinate work and provide necessary guidance.
  • Assist in the annual development of the fixed overhead budget.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings as needed.
  • Attend special purpose meetings as requested.
  • Act as the Pension and Profit Sharing Administrator.
  • Coordinate annual audits with external CPA firms and other auditing entities.
  • Analyze specific general ledger accounts.
  • Address human resource issues that may arise with team members.
  • Manage accounting functions for related entities.
  • Ensure compliance with software licensing agreements.
  • Prepare various reports as required by management, financial institutions, or regulatory bodies.
  • Evaluate employee performance in line with company policies.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the President.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITY

  • Comprehensive understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and project cost accounting.
  • Proficient in the Timberline System.
  • Familiarity with Payroll Tax regulations.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Effective delegation skills.
  • Capable of collaborating with diverse groups, including bankers, insurance professionals, consultants, and vendors.
  • Strong written communication skills for professional correspondence.
  • Analytical skills to identify discrepancies in financial data.
  • Negotiation and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, direct, and control relevant matters effectively.
  • Knowledge of various accounting and industry-specific software used by the company.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting is required; MBA preferred. CPA or CMA credentials are also preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • 3-5 years of experience as a controller is preferred.
  • 5-10 years of overall experience in accounting.
  • Experience in the Building Construction industry is preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS

  • CPA or CMA credentials are preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
  • May require occasional overnight travel.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours as needed.
  • Typical office environment with potential exposure to extreme temperatures.
  • Frequent activities include sitting and viewing computer screens.
  • Occasional activities may include standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and climbing.
