The role of a Rigger involves a variety of responsibilities, which may include:
- Evaluating tasks from inception to completion, ensuring adherence to safe and effective work practices. This includes planning and overseeing minor rigging assignments.
- Creating slings and towing bridles by looping and splicing cables or utilizing crimping tools to secure metal sleeves around cable ends.
- Splicing and tying ropes to construct nets, ladders, and other rigging structures.
- Installing components such as hooks, swivels, and turnbuckles within rigging setups.
- Managing the reeving of lines through blocks and pulleys.
- Applying canvas or leather coverings to rigging at points of friction, utilizing sail twine and a sail maker's palm and needle.
- Selecting and attaching appropriate gear, braces, and cushioning based on load weight and distribution, the availability of hoisting equipment, and any potential obstacles.
- Directing crane operators or other machinery personnel to maneuver loads safely.
- Installing support structures for rigging gear, including beam clamps, pad eyes, and gallows frames.
- Controlling the movement of heavy machinery through tight spaces using jacks, pulley blocks, chain falls, and rollers.
- Installing or maintaining ship rigging systems, such as those for masts, antennas, and winches.
- Setting up masts, booms, yardarms, and gaffs as required.
- Constructing and suspending scaffolding and stages that necessitate the use of blocks and pulleys.
