Overview:
The Surgical First Assistant Specialist is accountable to the Chief of Surgery.

In the operating room and other procedural areas, this role operates under the guidance and oversight of the lead surgeon, ensuring that surgical services are delivered effectively.

Responsibilities include preparing and managing surgical instruments, equipment, and both sterile and non-sterile items for various procedures. The specialist is also responsible for setting up the operating room and performing essential preoperative and postoperative tasks to achieve optimal patient outcomes. This role involves assisting in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other critical intraoperative functions.

Engagement in all facets of surgery is expected, including neonatal, pediatric, and adult cases, as well as heart and lung transplants and mechanical circulatory support.

When not fulfilling the Surgical First Assistant role, the individual will be required to perform duties as a Certified Surgical Technician in the Operating Room.

The position also includes providing educational guidance in congenital cardiovascular surgical care for Surgical Technicians and Registered Nurses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and confirm all required surgical instruments and equipment. Prepare necessary surgical tools and items for procedures. Position patients according to the surgeon's instructions. Assist in the setup of surgical and procedural rooms, ensuring optimal placement of items for efficient practice.
  • Prepare patients for surgical procedures, which may involve transport, prepping, positioning, and draping. Maintain the integrity of the surgical field and perform preoperative and postoperative duties to ensure the best results for patients. Collaborate effectively as a member of the operating room team.
  • During surgical procedures, accurately place and secure retractors, manage packing with sponges, and perform digital manipulation of tissue. Provide suctioning, irrigation, or sponging as necessary. Handle suture materials, clamp or cauterize vessels or tissue, and ligate clamped vessels or tissue. Apply hemostatic clips and local hemostatic agents. Utilize tourniquets, vessel loops, or non-crushing clamps for temporary hemostasis. Insert drainage tubes and close wound layers as directed by the surgeon. Employ appropriate techniques for the closure of body tissue planes and select suitable wound dressings.
  • Post-surgery, prepare specimens for laboratory analysis and assist in monitoring and transporting patients to recovery areas.
  • Engage in departmental and hospital-wide informational meetings and in-services, including staff meetings and seminars. Review departmental and hospital policies and procedures annually.

    When not serving in the Surgical First Assistant capacity, the individual will perform as a Certified Surgical Technician in the Operating Room.

  • Provide support to staff and physicians during after-hours emergency surgeries (on-call). Act as a mentor for newly hired surgical technicians and nurses.

Additional Information

Educational Requirements:

  • Graduation from a CAAHEP accredited program. An Associate's degree in Health Sciences or a related field is required.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • Current Surgical Technology and Surgical First Assistant Certification. Current BLS and PALS certification.
Professional Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a surgical technician; supervisory or managerial experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements:

  • Ability to provide safe and appropriate care within the standards established by the Association of Surgical Technologists.
  • Demonstrates strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Capable of articulating and demonstrating knowledge of Surgical Assistant theory and practice.
  • Provides educational support for Surgical Assistants, surgical technicians, and RNs within the scope of congenital cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Communicates positively and professionally with all internal and external stakeholders.
