Job Overview

Nemours Children's Health is in search of a dedicated Patient Care Technician for our specialized care unit. This is a full-time role, requiring 60 hours biweekly, with rotating shifts, including every third weekend and every other holiday. The individual in this position will be responsible for: Supporting the daily operations of the patient care unit and assisting the healthcare team in delivering patient care activities, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Our specialized care unit accommodates a diverse group of patients ranging from infants to young adults, focusing on orthopedic recovery, comprehensive rehabilitation, and acute care for conditions such as traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries. The unit is designed to provide single patient rooms, ensuring privacy and family involvement during the care process.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Maintain adequate inventory of essential equipment and supplies in designated areas at established levels.
  2. Ensure a safe and hygienic environment within the patient care unit.
  3. Assist patients with daily living activities (bathing, feeding, play, etc.) and provide additional care as directed.
  4. Support healthcare staff during examinations or treatment procedures, including patient positioning and comfort.
  5. Accurately charge all utilized supplies.
  6. Coordinate with pharmacy, dietary, and other departments as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  7. Collect patient specimens (blood, urine, stool, etc.) while prioritizing patient safety and comfort.
  8. Utilize Hospital Information Systems for patient care documentation, including vital signs and care activities.
  9. Effectively communicate information among physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel, and other team members.
  10. Transport patients and deliver reports, supplies, and other materials as needed.
  11. Safely transport medications from the pharmacy to licensed personnel in the patient care area.
  12. Promote patient safety and engage in activities that adhere to established safety standards and protocols.
  13. Professionally manage the front desk of the patient care unit as required, including answering calls, greeting patients, and processing mail.
  14. Participate in departmental and hospital initiatives for Quality Assessment and Improvement, identifying service enhancement opportunities.
  15. Engage in educational programs within the unit, department, and hospital.
  16. Attend unit and departmental meetings regularly.
  17. Demonstrate proficiency in caring for patients across all age groups, from neonates to adults.
Qualifications:
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification required.
  • Preferred minimum of 1 year of experience in patient care.
  • Ability to read and write accurately.
  • Understanding of laboratory orders, computer systems, and basic medical terminology.
  • Capability to obtain specimens from a primarily pediatric patient population, including those who may be ill or have limitations.
