Internship Summary: The Direct Service Internship at Youth Guidance is structured to fulfill academic requirements for internships, practicums, or capstone projects that involve hands-on learning with consistent supervision and direct interaction with clients. This internship aligns with the criteria of various degree programs in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, and similar fields. Interns will engage in weekly supervision and monthly team discussions, and may facilitate individual and group counseling sessions based on their skills and proficiency. Internships primarily take place in educational settings but may also include virtual or community-based service delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Observe, assist, or lead group and individual sessions in educational environments (involvement level varies based on intern's skills and requirements)
  • Conduct evaluations on youth participating in Youth Guidance programs
  • Provide family support and crisis intervention as necessary
  • Complete weekly documentation and special administrative tasks
  • Engage in staff development and mandatory training sessions
  • Participate in organizational committees (may be required or optional, depending on department and internship role)
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program
  • Seeking academic credit through an internship

Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to collaborate effectively in team environments and work independently
  • Demonstrates cultural awareness, including understanding the impacts of systemic oppression on marginalized groups
  • Creative in engaging with youth
  • Exhibits a collaborative approach to treatment and care
  • Fluency in both Spanish and English is highly preferred

  • While performing the duties of this role, the intern is required to sit and stand for extended periods, frequently communicate, use hands and fingers for various tasks, and occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Close visual acuity is necessary for tasks such as data analysis, transcription, and computer use.
  • Occasional lifting or moving of up to 25 pounds may be required.
