Overview

Tesla is seeking a Power Systems Engineer to join its team of innovators in the field of clean and sustainable energy. As a key member of the company's engineering team, you will play a critical role in designing, modeling, and integrating our solar-battery-charging ecosystem to enable a green energy transformation.

Job Summary

We are looking for a highly skilled Power Systems Engineer with expertise in power system modeling, control theory, and experience working with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing tools. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing detailed models of our technology and controls strategies operating on the grid and forming microgrids of different sizes.

Responsibilities

  • Create plant controls and dynamic models in real-time simulations tools for pre-commissioning testing of grid-scale BESS projects.
  • Perform modeling and CHIL testing to ensure that the product behavior meets the product's design specification and project's requirement. Improve models or work with the product team to influence system architecture/controls or work with the customer to set clear expectations of the intended behavior.
  • Continue to increase our in-house capability to model Tesla's product in CHIL testing environment to test the product power system's dynamics behavior when connected to the large and small grids.
  • Improve and build CHIL test setups and automate them to perform studies in a time-efficient way with clear indexing/documentation of a large test data set.
  • Work with both the product design team and the control teams to keep models current with the technology roadmap.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience of working on at least one HIL tool: RTDS, Typhoon, OPAL-RT.
  • Setting up and debugging full HIL testing systems including physical and software setups of meters, relays, controllers (like RTAC), network switches/protocols, power supplies, oscilloscopes, and interface cards.
  • Working knowledge in at least one power system modeling tools: PSCAD/EMTP-RV, PSSE, PF.
  • Experience of working on automation scripts and control design using at least one programming language: Python, Rust, C, C++, or Go.
  • Direct experience of using HIL setup for modeling large and small grids with understanding of grid-level performance requirements.
  • Expert knowledge of control theory and power systems.
  • Advanced degree with focus in power systems or control preferred.
  • Communicate findings in a concise & clear manner and ability to work cross-functionally with customers, engineering, business development, and deployment personnel.

Compensation and Benefits

  • The estimated annual salary range for this position is $112,000 - $234,000, depending on individual factors such as location and experience.
