London, Kentucky, United States Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) Full time

Are you passionate about maritime robotics, autonomy, and artificial intelligence?

Do you enjoy tackling technical challenges, seeking innovative solutions, and seeing projects through to fruition?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).

We are in search of a Maritime Autonomous Systems Engineer to assist the US Navy in prototyping and integrating cutting-edge maritime robotics technologies for uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs), uncrewed undersea vehicles (UUVs), and other robotic platforms.

In this position, you will play a crucial role in addressing the Navy's most pressing challenges by leveraging your systems engineering, testing, and leadership expertise to fulfill the objectives of APL's prototype initiatives and enhance our sponsors' acquisition strategies for autonomous systems.

You will become part of a dynamic, innovative, and success-oriented team, where you will:

  • Determine the optimal application of Systems Engineering best practices to autonomy, AI, and uncrewed vehicles, from initial prototypes to formal Navy acquisitions.
  • Ensure effective system development through mission breakdown and analysis, requirements specification, architecture formulation, and design evaluations.
  • Design, coordinate, and implement testing of autonomous systems utilizing software-in-the-loop modeling and simulation as well as in-water assessments.
  • Employ Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) throughout the development and execution phases.
  • Lead technical teams at APL engaged in prototyping software and hardware for maritime uncrewed systems.

Additionally, you will:

  • Develop and facilitate design reviews while coordinating the creation of technical documentation and presentations.
  • Collaborate with US Navy end users to comprehend their missions, identify essential features, and establish confidence in maritime autonomous systems.
  • Work closely with partners in other research institutions and industry to showcase uncrewed maritime vehicle capabilities.

Qualifications:

You meet our minimum qualifications for this role if you:

  • Possess over 7 years of relevant Systems Engineering experience and hold a bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Have experience in developing and integrating uncrewed vehicles, autonomy software, and/or maritime systems.
  • Have a background in requirements development, conducting trade studies, managing system integration, and overseeing testing and evaluation.
  • Have experience collaborating with DOD or other government entities.
  • Are familiar with SysML and have experience in creating MBSE models applicable to these systems.
  • Exhibit exceptional organizational and planning abilities, interpersonal skills, and outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Are willing and able to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Can obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and ultimately achieve a Top Secret level clearance.

If selected, you will undergo a government security clearance investigation and must meet the criteria for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications:

You will exceed our minimum requirements if you:

  • Hold an M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Have experience in developing, integrating, and testing software architectures or software testing pipelines, leading scrums or software teams, and/or implementing Agile software acquisition and DevSecOps methodologies.
  • Have applied your Systems Engineering and Test & Evaluation expertise in the prototyping of US Navy USVs, UUVs, or other uncrewed systems.
