Marine Robotics Systems Engineer

London, Kentucky, United States Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) Full time
Position Overview

Are you enthusiastic about maritime robotics, autonomy, and artificial intelligence? Do you enjoy tackling technical challenges, exploring innovative solutions, and seeing projects through to fruition?

We are in search of a Marine Robotics Systems Engineer to assist in the prototyping and integration of advanced maritime robotic technologies for uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs), uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs), and other robotic platforms.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will play a pivotal part in addressing significant challenges faced by the Navy as you leverage your systems engineering, testing, and leadership capabilities to fulfill the objectives of prototype initiatives and enhance the acquisition strategies for autonomous systems.

You will be part of a dynamic, innovative, and results-oriented team, contributing to the legacy of scientific research and development.

Your Contributions
  • Apply systems engineering best practices to the development of autonomy, AI, and uncrewed vehicles, from initial prototypes to formal acquisition.
  • Ensure effective system development through mission analysis, requirements definition, architecture design, and trade studies.
  • Design, coordinate, and execute testing of autonomous systems utilizing software-in-the-loop modeling and simulation as well as in-water testing.
  • Utilize Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) throughout the system development lifecycle.
  • Lead technical teams in the prototyping of software and hardware for maritime uncrewed systems.
  • Facilitate design reviews and oversee the creation of technical documentation and presentations.
  • Collaborate with Navy end users to comprehend their missions and required features, establishing confidence in maritime autonomous systems.
  • Work closely with partners in research and industry to showcase the capabilities of uncrewed maritime vehicles.
Qualifications

You are a suitable candidate if you possess:

  • Over 7 years of relevant experience in systems engineering with a degree in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in the development and integration of uncrewed vehicles, autonomy software, and maritime systems.
  • Expertise in requirements development, trade studies, system integration management, and guiding testing and evaluation processes.
  • Experience collaborating with DOD or other governmental entities.
  • Familiarity with SysML and experience in developing MBSE models applicable to these systems.
  • Exceptional organizational, planning, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance and ultimately a Top Secret level clearance.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • A Master’s or Doctorate in Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Experience in developing, integrating, and testing software architectures or software testing pipelines, leading agile teams, and implementing DevSecOps.
  • Application of systems engineering and testing skills in the prototyping of US Navy USVs, UUVs, or other uncrewed systems.
