Job OverviewPosition Summary

Are you enthusiastic about the exploration, innovation, and application of advanced maritime technologies?

Do you aspire to contribute to addressing some of the most intriguing challenges faced by the US Navy in the underwater realm?

Do you possess a solid foundation in at-sea experimentation, systems architecture, integration of systems, underwater vehicles, or underwater sensing technologies?

If your answer is yes, we invite you to consider joining our team at APL. We are in search of an Undersea Systems Integration Engineer to become a part of the Ocean Systems and Engineering Group. In this capacity, you will facilitate the progression of our nation's next-generation maritime prototype systems, encompassing everything from conceptualization to deployment and evaluation. You will collaborate with a diverse team from government, industry, and academia to establish performance criteria, spearhead technical investigations, and create systems engineering deliverables for innovative maritime initiatives, including autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). This role also offers the chance to oversee testing and evaluation (T&E) processes, along with engaging with AUV developers and operators. As a valued member of our team, you will contribute to APL's esteemed legacy of scientific inquiry and development, as well as our trusted service to the nation.

As an Undersea Systems Integration Engineer, your responsibilities will include...

  • Utilizing creative problem-solving to meticulously develop, integrate, and assess technical solutions for maritime payloads, autonomous systems, acoustic technologies, communication frameworks, and vehicle autonomy.
  • Providing technical and/or project leadership for various technical initiatives that may encompass both hardware and software components.
  • Designing, integrating, and evaluating initial prototype Research and Development (R&D) systems.
  • Producing systems engineering documentation such as performance criteria, operational concepts, and system architecture/engineering plans.
  • Assisting in focused studies aimed at adapting technology to urgent or emerging challenges.
  • Collaborating with multiple DoD system partners to assess current strategies, risks, and opportunities to formulate and implement T&E strategies that enhance their programs and missions.
  • Working alongside AUV operators to establish operational and maintenance protocols that support the entire system lifecycle (which may require travel to partner organizations).

Qualifications

You meet our essential qualifications for this role if you...

  • Hold a B.S. degree in a technical or scientific discipline such as Systems Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or a related field.
  • Have over 7 years of experience in maritime systems or a closely related area.
  • Possess experience in generating and executing system test events.
  • Have a background in maritime platform design and integration.
  • Exhibit a passion for systems engineering methodologies and tools pertinent to maritime system development, integration, evaluations, and technology analysis.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and planning capabilities, with a proven track record in a collaborative environment.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills along with outstanding written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Can navigate the government infrastructure and assume leadership roles within a diverse team of contractors and government personnel.
  • Are willing to travel as necessary to fulfill the essential functions of the position.
  • Can obtain an interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and ultimately achieve a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will undergo a government security clearance investigation and must meet the criteria for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You will exceed our basic qualifications if you...

  • Hold an M.S. or Ph.D. degree in a technical or scientific discipline such as Systems Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
